While mounted classes are a staple in theFire Emblemseries, they have mostly stayed true to three types of mounts. Horses, pegasi, and wyverns have been the go-to for high-mobility combat. There have been a few variations in recent titles, such as the Griffon Knight in Awakening and the Kinshi Knight in Fates, but these fulfilled the same general role that pegasi have in the past. InFire Emblem: Engage, an entirely new class, the Wolf Knight, has been introduced.

While it is easy to compare it to the usual horse-riding classes, the Wolf Knight’s access to knives and focus on Speed, Dexterity, and Dodge open a door to new strategies and gameplay that have not previously been seen. Your introduction to the Wolf Knight class comes in Chapter 13 in the form of Merrin, an animal-obsessed Knight of Solm. Her ability to dart around the battlefield is a powerful asset, especially as the maps begin to get larger. With the right support and builds, she will continue to fight off hordes of Corrupted, all while looking cool as ever.

Growth Rates

Merrin’s stat line is incredible for a hit-and-run attacker. She boasts workable Strength and Magic alongside her stellar Speed and Dexterity growths, which are further boosted by her class bonuses. Her defensive stats are nothing to write home about, but they’re far from a significant weakness, especially when supported by her ability to avoid attacks. Finally, Merrin’s Build is quite high considering she uses swords and knives, which are quite light. With her base of 9, she can use plenty of weapons without penalty, letting her make full use of her stellar Speed stat.

Best Classes

Merrin’s native Wolf Knight fits her quite well, providing great mobility and access to two weapon types: swords and knife. The Wolf Knight’sclass skill is Hobble, which reduces the Movement of a foe by 2 if Merrin initiates combat with a knife. This allows you to limit the threat radius of dangerous foes, as long as you may get Merrin out of harm’s way after attacking. Even if you cannot, her ability to dodge attacks is incredible, even without investment.

If you find you have an overabundance of sword users, switching Merrin to a lance-wielding Wolf Knight can be a nice change of pace, though axes are likely too heavy for her Build stat. Her naturally high Speed makes her quite versatile, plenty of other classes can work well on her, if you feel the need to change up your team. Wyvern Knight provides a higher Strength growth, and Griffin Knight supports Merrin’s good Magic stat, with both enabling her to fly over otherwise inaccessible terrain. Finally, Halberdier provides an excellent mix of stat growths, and could be worth spending a few levels in, depending on the rest of your team.

Best Weapons

While knives are quite a powerful weapon type, they do not offer many options for versatility. They fall into two categories, those with a 1-2 range, and those with only 1. In the majority of situations you will prefer a ranged weapon, as it lets you avoid counterattacks from melee enemies, but the increased Mt and Crit of the melee knives can sometimes be game-changing. Alongside your choice of knives, Merrin should be equipped with a few swords.

The Killing Edge is a fantastic option that allows Merrin to flex her naturally high Dexterity by raising her Crit even further. In addition, you should absolutely consider equipping Merrin with a Levin Sword. Her Magic stat, while not topping any charts, is plenty strong enough to give the Levin Sword a significant damage advantage against Defense-stacked foes. Without such an option, Merrin will be near-useless against armored enemies. Finally, you should consider engraving Merrin’s weapon with an Avo-boosting emblem such as Holy or Awakening to allow Merrin to function as a competent Dodge tank, especially when standing in Avo-boosting terrain.

Best Emblem Rings

As with any other speedy unit,Merrin has two incredible options for Emblem Rings, Lyn and Sigurd. Sigurd’s boost to mobility and access to Canter allows Merrin to utilize a deadly hit-and-run playstyle, as well as boosting her potentially underwhelming damage with Momentum. Lyn ensures that Merrin can snag follow-up attacks even against high-Speed enemies with her Speedtaker skill while providing safety with Alacrity, and a powerful hit against flying units with her access to bows. These are both phenomenal options for Merrin, though they are highly contested Rings due to their power. If you have already equipped these Rings onto another unit, Marth, Eirika, and Lucina grant helpful boosts that can help Merrin shine.

Best Skills

When choosing skills for Merrin to inherit, Sigurd and Lyn stand out above all others. These skills provide the perfect bonuses for her playstyle, boosting her Speed, damage output, and survivability in the face of counterattacks. Canter’s ability to reposition, combined with the Wolf Knight class’s Hobble skill, can allow Merrin to stay just out of reach of slow-moving enemies, chipping them down and allowing teammates to take them out. Finally, Dodge+10 is a strong budget option, as the other skills are quite costly.
