In just a few more days,Final Fantasy 7 Remakewill finally launch on PS4, bringing Cloud Strife and his Avalanche buddies back in one of the most iconic adventures in video games. It has been years since it was first revealed, and it will surely be one of the biggest releases of 2020. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming remake.
What isFinal Fantasy 7 Remake?
Final Fantasy 7 Remakeis a retelling of the classic PSOne game. Starring mercenary Cloud Strife and set in Midgar, you will help the rebellious eco-terrorist group Avalanche stop megacorporation Shinra from draining Mako, the planet’s lifeforce. At least, that is the plot at the very beginning. Without spoilers (even though the game is over 20 years old), the actual conflict is much grander in scale as you will inevitably find out.
It should be noted that this release is just the first part of the retelling. If you know the story,Final Fantasy 7 Remakewill end after the Midgar section of the original game. While this portion is around 6-10 hours in the original, the remake will be around 40-50 hours. Much of Midgar and the cast have been fleshed out making it a more complete experience.

Some of the original game’s key developers also returned ensuring this will be an authentic take of the beloved game. Tetsuya Nomura (Director and Character Designer), Yoshinori Kitase (Producer), Kazushige Nojima (Writer), and Nobuo Uematsu (Music Composer) have all returned.
Who should play it?
Like any remake, I’m sure some of you are asking, “Do I need to play the original in order to fully appreciateFinal Fantasy 7 Remake?” No, you do not need to play the original to play the remake. From ourreviewby Kris Cornelisse, he says, “Fans of the original will inevitably spot more references or appreciate the extra nods, but even newcomers should be able to slip in and find plenty to enjoy.”
This is kind of a loaded question. Who should play this remake? Well, like any video game, if what you see interests you, play it.
