InFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, Cloud, Aerith, and the Avalanche rebels were restricted to the Shinra-run metropolis of Midgar. While the green haze of Mako and the vibrant sectors brought the capital city to life,Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthhas unlocked several regions for players to explore in the world of Gaia.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Age, Height & Abilities Of Party Members

There’s a mixed bag of mercenaries, rebels, and hybrids included in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s party.

Adapting iconic locations from the original 1997 masterpiece, including Cosmo Canyon, the Gold Saucer, and Junon, Rebirth has expanded each region to offer a compelling open world and packed it full of Chocobos, atmospheric biomes, and addictive mini-games. Here are 10 of the best locations from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, including regions and more refined locations, and what chapter each area unlocks in.

10The Grasslands

Initiating Photo Mode

The Grasslands is the first region you come to in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and the scenic, coastal expanse puts the game’s scope and scale into perspective. Adapting the semi-open-world of the original game, Square Enix did a tremendous job of fleshing out each region, and The Grasslands is the first that’ll have you reaching for your camera.

Offering a visit to Bill’s Chocobo Farm off the rip and hellbent on channeling the beauty of Gaia through lush stretches and stunning ruins, The Grasslands deserves a place on this list for being the first breath of fresh air in Rebirth.

9Corel Prison

Harnessing Cyberpunk vibes and Piko

After the high of visiting the Gold Saucer for the first time, Cloud and crew are plunged into the depths of Corel and forced to spend some time with Gus, or Mr. Coates, running Corel Prison under Dyne. Despite being a coerced visit, the prison’s aesthetic carries the flavor ofCyberpunk 2077’sSanto Domingo, which makes this stay memorable.

In addition to the attractive design, Corel Prison is home toPiko the Chocobo, who needs help recuperating through leafy greens. There’s a mixed bag of emotions while being subjected to the prison, but the character of this specific location has a slightly longer-lasting effect than the overall Grasslands region.

8Upper Junon

Delivering nostalgia from 1997

The original Final Fantasy 7 game debuted several unforgettable moments during Cloud’s party visit to Junon, and Upper Junon recreates all the good parts. From the Parade mini-game to the Bald Bar and the addictive Junon marching theme, Rebirth captures the undercover mission to perfection and adds a few high-octane cutscenes to sweeten the experience.

Grouping with Aerith and Tifa in the parade, Cloud’s Upper Junon adventure also gives insight into his time as a SOLDIER, and the design of the overall military installation was a stellar sight. Despite Upper Junon facilitating the uniform for Red XIII’s nightmarish appearance as an Infantry member on the boat to Costa del Sol, this city offers more grandeur than Corel Prison.

7Costa Del Sol

Too hot even for the Cosmo Canyon beast

Playing into Rebirth’s light-hearted side, Costa del Sol offered some well-deserved downtime for Cloud and his party after the Junon performance and the encounter with Jenova on the boat. This resort also saw the return of Johnny from Remake and offered a handful of addictive mini-games, including Run Wild and Pirate’s Rampage, to bide your time until the Gold Saucer.

One con that keeps this seaside affair in the low ranks is the rather repetitive “Costa!” greeting every resident feels compelled to say to you, but the summer vibes, the opportunity to bond with your party, and the entertaining Wheelies give this paradise the edge over Upper Junon.

Cloud Riding A Wheelie In Costa Del Sol

The picturesque debut of Queen’s Blood

After the Nibelheim incident during Rebirth’s demo, Kalm is the first location you can openly explore, before even heading out into The Grasslands. The Eastern European design flaunted in the architecture lends the village a picturesque look and there’s plenty to uncover within the hustle and bustle.

Kalm is also where players can try the tabletop card game Queen’s Blood for the first time, which is bound to have you hooked after a few matches. Reminding you of the limited exploration in the original game, Kalm was reimagined into an inviting stay that remains one of the most charismatic locations on the map, beating Costa del Sol.

5Nibelheim

An eerie place of memories

Returning to where it all began, Nibelheim doesn’t open up fully until later in the game, but players will remember the devastation Sephiroth left in the demo. Cloud and Tifa call this mountain village home, and there are also a few wholesome side quests to indulge in here, including finding Tifa’s cat, Fluffy.

Accompanied by a fantastic backdrop of jagged mountains, Nibelheim is swimming in memories for the ex-SOLDIER and Avalanche fighter, both of whom are keen to return to their water tower sitting spot. There’s also a challenging piano game to best in this location and hosts Shinra Manor, which we’ll visit later. Nibelheim holds great significance to the overall story in Final Fantasy 7 too, which raises its importance above Kalm.

A highland ambiance

Further into gameplay, you’ll have the chance to explore Zack Fair’s home region of Gongaga, which very much puts The Grasslands to shame. Home to the titular village overseen by Cissnei - a returning character from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion - the greater Gongaga region is bloated with gorgeous jungles and vicious enemies to overcome.

Seven seconds till the end.

Becoming ninja-like in this biome with green Chocobos, Gongaga echoes the Irish and Scottish highlands, emphasized by the native instruments used in the region’s theme. It’s also home to a nearby, derelict reactor that serves as the stage for a stunning battle with Scarlet and the party’s first introduction to a Weapon. Gongaga is a beautiful region worthy of a high ranking, standing more breathtaking than Nibelheim’s vista.

3Shinra Manor

A haunting but iconic location

Located in Cloud and Tifa’s hometown of Nibelheim, Shinra Manor lies somewhat in ruins and used to be frequented by Shinra Electric Power Company researchers. Hosting Sephiroth’s research into Jenova during the demo and later found to be the resting place of gothic gunslinger, Vincent Valentine, Shinra Manor is one of the most atmospheric and exciting locations on this list.

The Manor also presents one of the game’s most challenging encounters, as Cloud and his six-member party face off against Vincent’s Galian Beast in the building’s underbelly. The place is the backdrop to a lot of exposition in the story and stays forefront within Rebirth and the original game, and its iconic status earns it third place.

2Gold Saucer

Sephiroth’s true nemesis

The bewitching Gold Saucer, lit up like the Las Vegas strip, is by far the One-Winged Angel’s greatest threat - purely because players spend most of their gameplay here instead of finding the Black Materia. Mini-games galore and the venue of choice for that all-important date with one of your party members, this amusement park flaunts endless entertainment.

Gathering a bursting roster of compulsive mini-games, including 3D Brawler, Galactic Saviors, and Chocobo Racing, presented in vibrant formats, the Gold Saucer was an anticipated location to visit in the remake project. This fun fair beats the beautiful expanse of Gongaga purely because of how much there is to do in the establishment - much to the frustration of Sephiroth.

Check out our list of the10 Best Mini-Gamesin Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, many of which reside in the Gold Saucer and will have you consumed for hours.

1Cosmo Canyon

A sun-soaked pocket full of culture

Taking first place in this ranking is Red XIII’s (or should we say Nanaki’s) home, Cosmo Canyon, offering a warm and hazy biome nestled in a tall rock plateau. Also known as the “Valley of the Fallen Star”, Cosmo Canyon is home to several important features and causes, including Bugenhagen’s observatory and the founding place of the eco-terrorist group, Avalanche.

Additionally, the pilgrimage site in Rebirth takes Nanaki on his trial to become the Watcher of the Vale and delivers one of the game’s most poignant backstories regarding the beast and his lineage - which is reminiscent of the emotional damage inherited from The Lion King. Ultimately, Cosmo Canyon deserves a top ranking for its rich culture passed down from the warrior tribe, its influence on the study of planetology, and for being the birthplace of Final Fantasy 7’s top nuanced character.
