After the huge success of theFalloutTV show on Amazon Prime earlier this month,Bethesdawanted to keep riding that wave andannounced in a new blog postthat a next-gen update forFallout 4would be released on April 25th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Asnoted by PCGamer, the update was actually first announced in 2022 and set for a 2023 release. But better late than never, I suppose.
In its re-announcement, Bethesda promised PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players new Performance and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements, bug fixes, and the ability to play at 60 FPS with increased resolutions. As for PC players, the update finally added Ultrawide support and bug fixes. Oh, and Fallout 4 is now also Steam Deck verified, if you’re part of the handheld master race.

Fallout 4’s Head Writer Is Regretting His ‘SAME. GUY.’ Reveal
“I get dumb when I get excited… and I get excited a lot.”
Unfortunately, fans who were eager to jump into Fallout 4’s next-gen update have been left disappointed. Not only did Fallout 4 owners who received the game for free via PlayStation Plus not receive the next-gen update (althoughBethesda says this issue is being investigated), but PC players have noted that Ultrawide support is quite literally just a stretched image.

Fallout 4’s Next-Gen Update Is A Bit Of A Mess
In total, Fallout 4’s next-gen update has a total of 16 bug fixes, according to the Steam patch notes. According to players on Reddit, that’s just not enough. “Damn, the bugfix list is SHORT. I had very low expectations but this is MUCH less than I expected. They didn’t fix almost any of the bugs that annoyed me the most (VATS crash and perception bug in Survival, for example),“one Reddit user noted.
Another usernoted on X(formerly Twitter) that there is still a lip-syncing issue with NPC dialogue when playing at a higher FPS, forcing the dialogue to skip. “This should be the first thing fixed in a “next-gen” update,” the user said.

Then there’s the issue with Ultrawide support, as multiple users are reporting that the supposed Ultrawide support simply stretches the image, causing a clunky-looking UI and no ability to change the field of view to compensate for the new width.
Last, but certainly not least, is the Quality mode bug on Xbox Series X|S. Despite the fact that the entire point of this “next-gen” update is to add 60 FPS capability on consoles with Quality and Performance modes, one of those modes doesn’t even work on Xbox Series X|S.

Digital Foundry’sThomas Morgan took to Xto confirm that only the new Performance mode is working on the console. “Disabling the performance mode seemingly does nothing. It stays at 60fps and the res bound stays the same,” Morgan said. There has been no word from Bethesda on this issue as of yet, but you’d like to think a fix will be deployed pretty soon.
