If there is one thing that we know about Hollywood it is that they love their sequels and prequels. While there is nothing wrong with it, fans of cinema would really like the studios to focus on new and original stories instead of making cash grabs that use nostalgia to bring in the audience. Now, Jim Caviezel’sThe Passion of the Christhas become the latest victim to it all.

The Passion of the Christ starring Jim Caviezel

It has recently been announced that Mel Gibson’s biblical drama will soon be getting a sequel for itself, something which has been in development for years. The O4G was released 20 years ago and was the last film people would have expected to get a sequel of. Well, it looks like Hollywood really needs to rethink its approach.

Jim Caviezel Returns as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s Sequel

2004’sThe Passion of the Christfocused mainly on the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life before he was crucified. During the film’s climax,Jim Caviezel’s Jesus’ body was entombed after the crucifixion and he was resurrected three days later.

Back in 2016, writer Randall Wallace confided inThe Hollywood Reporterthat he had started working on the sequel’s script which will focus on the resurrection. Clearly, the plan has been in motion for years now.

Finally, the team of the sequel,The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection,is getting ready for production. According to the Italian news agencyItalpress,Mel Gibsonand the others are in Malta on a five-day-long trip looking for perfect locations for their sequel. As per the report, the team has been having discussions with the Maltese authorities as well as Prime Minister Robert Abela himself.

Last year, Gibson opened up about the sequel’s script and gave people an idea about what they should expect from the upcoming film. He revealed that he was currently dealing with two versions of the story and while one of them takes a more expected route, the other is nothing short of an“acid trip.”

He toldComingSoon.net,

I have two scripts and one of them is very structured and very strong script and kind of more what should expect and the other is like an acid trip. Because you’re going into other realms and stuff. I mean you’re in hell and you’re watching the angels fall. It’s like crazy.

The sequel should begin production in early 2025 with Caviezel returning as Jesus and Gibson as director.

Fans Have a Lot to Say about the Sequel

When the news of the sequel made its way to social media, fans of Hollywood obviously had their two cents to share. While some wondered what the story could possibly be, others were more worried about how Jesus would have aged 20 years during the resurrection given the fact thatThe Passion of the Christcame out two decades ago.

And then there were of course some jokes about the forthcoming of the BCU – the Biblical Cinematic Universe. Take a look at some of the most hilarious responses to the sequel below:

Even Christ is having sequels now?

Where getting the BCU!! The biblical Cinematic Universe !

It’s going to look weird when the newly-resurrected Jesus has aged over 20 years.

KeepingThe Passion of the Christ: Resurrectionaside for a minute, Hollywood’s love affair with sequels has clearly gotten out of hand. WithToy Story 5, Frozen 3, Mufasa: The Lion King, and more on the way, the question is, how many sequels are too many sequels?

What once used to be an occasional revisit to iconic stories is now an endless cycle of franchises that refuse to end. Sure, there are some sequels that got theformula rightbut come on, do we really need them all?

Fans are mostly tired of sequels, prequels, and remakes. Everyone wants a good original story they can watch without the fear of Hollywood tainting a beloved legacy.

The Passion of the Christis available to rent/buy on Apple TV.
