Ereban: Shadow Legacy is a stealth platformer developed by Baby Robot Games released earlier this month. You play the role of Ayana, the last Ereban, as she embarks on a mission to take down the evil megacorporation Helios.

In an interview withGame Rant, creative director Alex Márquez spoke about how much the stealth genre means to the team behind Ereban: Shadow Legacy, and how other stealth games influenced Ayana’s story.

Stealth Games offer an unparalleled gameplay experience. Here are some of the best titles that made us fall in love with this genre.

“As huge fans of stealth games, all we wanted to do with this game is to give back something to this genre, which sadly is a bit abandoned right now,” Márquez says.

He has a point, major releases in the stealth genre have been few and far between in recent years. Gloomwood comes to mind, having been released in 2022, and Hitman 3 provides its own brand of stealth gameplay. Though, it’s been years since we’ve seen a new instalment of Dishonored, Thief or Splinter Cell.

“It’s the type of game we enjoy as players within the team: singleplayer, straight to the point, not too long, no microtransactions…” Márquez continues. “In short, it’s our love letter to stealth games. As long as people enjoy merging with the shadows with Ayana during her adventure, I’ll be more than happy.”

Márquez remarks that he always plays stealth games non-lethally if given the option because he feels bad for causing avoidable deaths. However, in games like Dishonored, you miss out on certain mechanics when you choose to be a full pacifist. With this in mind, the team provides a compromise in Ereban: Shadow Legacy.

Players encounter robotic Symulants and also Helios workers, salaried employees of the evil corporation. You need not feel bad for killing the Symulants, but there’s a moral trade-off when you kill Helios workers.

“Are you a pragmatic person, who, in order to defeat their enemy, will kill anyone who stands in your way, or do you prefer to struggle more if that means you won’t murder innocent people?” Márquez posits. “As the last of the Ereban, that’s essentially what Ayana has to decide, and the legacy she will define at the end of the adventure.”
