Elden Ring Nightreignisa multiplayer game! Surely this means you can play with your friend, right? …right?
Well, maybe not. The company,quote, “overlooked"two-player play sessions a bit. You can run as a trio, or a solo, but if you’ve got one friend you want to venture with, or if you want to have a Nightreign couples' night, you’ll be looking for a third wheel.
Anyway, before the game was 24 hours old, a mod fixed it. What was so difficult for FromSoftware is now possible, though not released quite yet. Ina blog post, the mod’s creator - LukeYui - explained the situation.
“Elden Ring Nightreign was released today. I played a little bit this evening and managed to get together a functional multiplayer system without connecting to the matchmaking servers.”
In their coverage,PC Gamermade interesting note of the clock. At the time their article went out, Nightreign had been released only 16 hours prior. And at that point, LukeYui’s blog post was 12 hours old. A bit of napkin math offers a fairly impressive figure for how quickly this all came together.
“I haven’t comitted to making this a public mod as of yet, however if people would like it just let me know and I’d get it release ready. If not, then I’ll just keep it as a WIP project on the side.”
This isn’t the mod maker’s first rodeo when it comes to Elden Ring multiplayer mods, which may explain their speed here. TheElden Ring Seamless Co-op mod(it’s exactly what it sounds like) was also their creation.

FromSoftware does intend to improve the game’s multiplayer experience in post-launch updates, and it’s possible that it’ll be a short wait. If it was this easy for an outsider, perhaps the devs could pull some strings. But maybe there’s a complication with the game’s anti-cheat or something similarly technical for them to use as an excuse.
For now, all we’ve got is an unreleased mod - but if interest is all it needs to get released, then it may very well have it.

Because the nature of their mod bypasses the game’s matchmaking servers, and their associated anticheat, other mods could also be played alongside it - even in multiplayer.

FromSoftware is fine-tuning the game’s balance up until release.
If you want to vary up your runs, a big ol' heap of mods is a great way to do that - it’s helped me get through more than one extra playthrough of Skyrim or XCOM 2.
Obviously, since the game is so new, we don’t yet have the mods to create that sort of experience. But, for the same reason, we may not need them for a while. We have a whole Nightreign to enjoy!
