Possibly one of the biggest surprises revealed at The Game Awards 2024 is FromSoftware’s Elden Ring: Nightreign, a multiplayer-focused standalone spin-off of the super-successful Elden Ring open-world action-RPG.
Just one look at the reveal trailer, you’re able to tell it’s a vastly different game from its highly-acclaimed big brother, with what appears to be “hero” characters, which might spark concern for some people. If you’re worried that this means FromSoftware is going the live service route, don’t fret, as the studio confirmed that won’t happen with Elden Ring: Nightreign.

Elden Ring: Nightreign Will Be A “Complete Package Out Of The Box”
In aninterview, game director Junya Ishizaki mentions how the in-development game will have everything out of the box at release, stating, “With Nightreign, we wanted to have a game that felt like a complete package out of the box on the day of purchase, so everything is unlockable, everything is contained with that purchase. It’s not what we’d consider a ‘live service’ game,”
When asked whether Nightreign will have any post-release content, Ishizaki notes that balance updates are planned, though wouldn’t confirm whether we’ll see new characters, stages, bosses and the like be rolled out either as paid DLC or free content drops post-launch, since they’re focusing on the game’s release first.

However, Ishizaki isn’t entirely shutting down the idea, adding, “But we will make considerations after the game’s release. Especially in the form of post-release updates—balance updates, things like this that we’ve done with previous games—this will definitely be a priority going forward. For anything else, we’re still in the process of thinking about the possibilities.”

Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Elden Ring spans over hundreds of bosses, but the greatest of them all wasn’t even showcased till fans took it in their own hands.
If there’s one studio that fans have trust in, it’s FromSoftware. Let’s hope that doesn’t change when Elden Ring: Nightreign releases sometime in 2025 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The game’s first playtest has been announced, with more details availablehere.
