In case you didn’t know, Elden Ring: Nightreign isn’t just deviating from theElden Ringfranchise by being a multiplayer-focused game (though it will allow gamers to play it solo or as a trio just not as a duo), but it’s also bringing some roguelike elements to the franchise as well.

While some might see this as FromSoftware chasing the roguelike trend that seems quite popular these days, that’s not the case.

Elden Ring Nightreign is cutting the messenger feature that has been a major part of FromSoftware’s Souls games.

FromSoftware Isn’t Against Doing What Other Companies Are Doing, But That’s Not The Case With Nightreign

In an interview withPC Gamermagazine (viaGames Radar), Elden Ring: Nightreign game director Junya Ishizaki mentioned how in this new game, the studio wanted it all to feel like it’s coming together and culminating in a boss fight bu in a “more concentrated form.”

“For this new sense of accomplishment that you wouldn’t quite find with Elden Ring or our previous titles, we felt like we needed some new mechanics and some new elements to add into that mix. We’ve never really held the stance ‘let’s absolutely not do anything that other companies are doing or not follow any trends.’ So we didn’t really see this as chasing a trend, but we saw these as interesting elements that could work well within our multiplayer-focused session-based gameplay,” Ishizaki states.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, roguelike differs from a soulslike. Roguelike games focus on procedural generation and permadeath and focus on exploration with randomly generated environments. Examples of roguelike games include Hades, Spelunky and Dead Cells.

As for soulslike games, these are the ones inspired by FromSoftware’s Souls games (Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls). Usually, soulslike games emphasizes a high degree of difficulty, deliberate combat mechanics, and a system wherein if your character dies, you can usually recover the lost XP by retrieving it where your character died, or killing the enemy that struck the killing blow to you.

FromSoftware’s Elden Ring: Nightreign is bringing the franchise back with co-op multiplayer battles.

While Nightreign is borrowing elements from roguelite games, one thing it’s not, according to FromSoftware, is thatit’s not a live service title. I believe I’m not the only one breathing a sigh of relief when that was confirmed.

Elden Ring: Nightreign is set to be released sometime in 2025 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
