Elden Ringdirector Hidetaka Miyazaki has confirmed that support for2022’s game of the yearis far from over, and promised that the studio “has many other things it wants to do” during his award acceptance speech atThe Game Awards.

Elden Ring recently received thePVP colosseum update, which featured three new modes for players to jump into. These were: united combat (team battle mode), combat ordeal (free-for-all battle), and duel mode (two player versus). The type of content Miyazaki has in store for fans isn’t yet clear, but he has previously spoken to4gamerabout what he believes to be Elden Ring’s selling point, which is the sense of scale and adventure that comes with exploring the open world. So it’s possible that we can expect more locations and single-player experiences down the road.

Dark Soulsgames are already known for releasing single-player expansions with new locations and setting, but to expect the same from Elden Ring would be underselling its unique artistic direction. In an interview withFamitsu, Miyazaki talks about how the studio implemented 3D graphic techniques that mimic the real-life phenomenon of atmosphere scattering, which is the scattering of light when it hits the particles of the atmosphere.

By adopting volumetric fog with various gradations to reflect the lighting in game, it was possible to create a rich colored landscape according to the positional relationship of the sun, and a sense of adventure that couldn’t be found anywhere else.

The narrative also has a scale never seen before thanks to the contribution of George R. R. Martin, and FromSoftware stories create a unique sense of freedom in how they can be interpreted and pieced together by the players, but Miyazaki told 4gamer that his next project is intended to have an even higher degree of abstraction than ever before.

The scale of Elden Ring was possible as well thanks to the increase of staff and human resources within the studio, and the director also spoke about creating a new system where the next titles are to be developed by young creators, but with a similar level of quality. With all of this in mind, it is safe to hold high expectations for Elden Ring’s upcoming content, however it might end up.
