Dragon’s Dogma 2’sstrict adherence to its unforgiving quest design is one of the biggest things that allows it to stand out from thecrowd of RPGsin recent years.

Dragon Dogma’s AI pawns are the best thing I’ve come across in gaming in a very long time!

While the lack of guidance in the form of quest markers can be frustrating to handle, nothing is more punishing than failing a timed quest, especially, when you didn’t know it was timed to begin with. Here is how these quests work.

How To Identify Timed Quests

Timed quests will always be labeled with an hourglass symbol next to the quest entry in the player journal (pictured above). If a quest doesn’t have this symbol next to it, it’s safe to assume that it’s not a timed quest.

So far, we haven’t run intomain story queststhat were timed, as while the game is punishing, it’s not so unforgiving as to lock you out of the main story for arbitrary reasons.

Every timed quest is either a side quest or an escort mission. While there won’t be story-related consequences for failing these quests, it may result in a character’s death or loss of affinity with an NPC.

How To Complete Timed Quests

Set everything aside as soon as you get a timed quest andfocus on it to the exclusion of everything else. The game will never tell you how much time you have left in a Timed quest; it wants you to use your best judgment. As a general rule of thumb, don’t set up campif you can help it.Passing timein any way is a risk, one I’d advise you avoid.

If a man asks you tosave his grandkid from wolves, chances are the kid will be dead by the time you get to him if you take the time to stroll around the town, take in the sights, and rest at the inn.

Here’s an example to give an idea of how unforgiving timed quests can be. I got a quest toescort Glyndwyr, the elven archer whose sister you save in theTrial of Archery. Thinking I had at least a little bit of time, I ran around in the capital, depositing items at the inn, messing around with myPawn’s vocation, andacquiring skillsI had unlocked. Once I was ready, I rested at myhouseto start the long journey ahead on the next day, only to find Glyndwyr gone, and the quest failed.

Another type of quest that you might confuse with a Timed quest is the’wait a few days for x to happen’quest. You might be asked to wait for a few days forCaptain Brant to finish his investigation, wait for a few days for Sven to get back to you, or wait a few days forsomethingto happen at Melve, and many more. While these quests may appear to be timed at first glance, they’re not. You can safely ignore them for however long you choose.
