The internet was set ablaze whenPokemonfans got their first look at the live-actionDetective Pikachumovie througha trailer. Legendary Pictures has yet to release the movie in theaters yet, but the studio seems to be preparing for a sequel, attaching a screenwriter to the potential project.
Oren Uziel has screenwriting credits for22 Jump StreetandThe Cloverfield Paradox, withMen in Black Internationaland yes, the live-actionSonic the Hedgehogmoviereleasing later this year. It appears to be a show of confidence in the financial success of a project that no one seems to know how to feel about. Parts of that trailer seem to act as nice fanservice, witha wide variety of Pokemon coming to lifeon the big screen. At the same time, some of the “hyper-realistic” designs of the CGI models are weird and creepy as hell to look at. Get that Mr. Mime away from me.
This report fromTHRimplies that this is the earliest possible stage in production for this potential project, with no director or cast members attached. But Legendary Pictures may have the intention of turning Detective Pikachu into the start of a widerPokemoncinematic universe—some reports believe that more live-action films, one being a direct adaptation of Pokemon Red Version and Blue Version are in the works (this rumor viaWe Got It Covered), although be wary as none of this has been confirmed.
