Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series

Given its success, Warner Bros. executives wanted to revisit the series for the launch of their streaming platform HBO Max, now known as Max. However, creator Bruce Timm put a stop to that idea before it could get off the ground and his reason seems pretty valid.

“I’m not stepping on that third rail again”: Bruce Timm Got Traumatic Flashbacks When ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Exec Wanted a Disgusting Bruce Wayne-Barbara Gordon S*x Scene That Turned Another Legendary DCAU Movie into a Joke

When Warner Bros. was setting up the launch of HBO Max, executives approached Timm to revive his series for a few more episodes. However, unwilling to revisit that world again, the director straight up turned down the idea.

In an interview withThe Wrap, Timm stated,

They said, ‘Hey, how would you feel about going back and making some more ‘B:TAS’ episodes?’ And I’m like, ‘Nah, we’d been there, we’d done that.’ I wasn’t interested in just revisiting that world.

However, while discussing with executive producer James Tucker later on, Tucker made Timm realize that there were still a few more Batman stories he wanted to tell. While the director was intrigued, he stated that“nothing really happened for a year or two.”

Afterwards, Timm sat down on a Zoom meeting withMatt ReevesandJ.J. Abramswho wanted to produce a Batman show. Timm pitched them the idea of making a blend of Universal’s horror, Warner Bros.’ drama, gangster films, and a ton of action to create a Batman series.

Therefore, while Timm did not return toBatman: The Animated Series,he found his next project inBatman: Caped Crusader.

The reason is that they simply wouldn’t want anything to happen that would tarnish the original legacy of the animated show. Fans came out in support of Timm’s refusal, stating that while the DCAU was great, it shouldn’t be touched again out of fear of ruining things.

Here’s what DCAU fans had to say about WB’s proposal and Timm turning it down:

I’m so glad they didn’t revive it. The DCAU was good but people need to let it go.

Better to let the memory of the glory days remain a memory instead of trying to bring then back and risk polluting them.
