Ridiculous Games, an indie studio made up of former Midway, THQ Nordic, and Konami developers and known forVoltron VR Chronicles, has announced an intriguing new puzzle game exclusively for Nintendo Switch:Day and Night. WhileDay and Nightseems like your standardTetrisorColumnsinspired falling block puzzle game at first, it puts an interesting twist on the genre with a time of day mechanic that influences which blocks players can receive to clear groups of matching blocks.

This unique mechanic is best explained by Ridiculous Games CEO Jeremy Airey. “Players share a split-screen and must stack and combine matching blocks in groups of four or more to remove them. “So far, so normal, but inDay and Night, the two sides of the screen are presented as either time state, with day and night blocks spawning for both players. As players can only collect blocks that match their time state, the core game becomes a dual challenge, with players focusing on collecting their active time-matching blocks while managing an ever-growing number of inactive blocks.” Players will also be able to manipulate what time of day it is after building up a meter, which opens up a lot of tactical opportunities.

Day and Night’sdeviation from the typical puzzle game formula is supposed to give it an easy to learn, hard to master backbone that also allows games likePuyo Puyo,Tetris, andColumnsto excel. Airey knows the pedigree of the genre as well, saying that the developers at Ridiculous Games “know we are standing on the shoulders of a classic genre and we have made sure to stay true to its core mechanics of barely-controlled chaos and split-second decision making, all the while expanding upon it in an exciting new way.”

The game is also set to include a ton of different single-player and multiplayer modes like its contemporaries. Of course, there is the standard Tutorial/Training mode called Rehearsal as well as a Versus mode that just allows people to play the game in its purest form. That being said,Day and Nightwill also feature a story mode with a lot of unique characters and scenarios, a survival mode where players try to survive through a calendar year, and a challenge mode with unique rules called Dares. For those looking for a new puzzle game to scratch the same itch as something likeTetris 99,Day and Nightseems like a creative and content-heavy alternative.
