In a time where anime is either good or bad,Dandadancomes as a pallet cleanser for all those that are bored of the mainstream. The first three episodes set the course of a story that is thrilling, filled with action and undoubtedly set to become emotional. Science Saru’s hand in animation with works likeDevilman Crybabyand theGhost in the ShellTV anime set for 2026 is a testament of how great their projects can become.

Yukinobu Tatsu’swriting and drawing style are perfectly captured by the series with the characters not only replicated but also elevated within the anime. The use of colors in the anime isn’t limited to making the series more visually stunning but also adds to its artistic capabilities. There are many ways in which anime could be regarded as a compilation of colorful storytelling. However,Dandadanuses a completely different strategy to instead use colors as a tool.

Dandadan Strikes Balance

From the opening to the very last scene of the third episode,Dandadancharts the course of a story that is not only centered around a female protagonist but also one that doesn’t work towards overshadowing other characters. Okarun and Momo’s chemistry is almost immediate, as is the case when many extroverts find their introverts. Momo’s obsession with Ken Takakura becomes ten times more amusing when she finds out Okarun’s real name.

The entire series runs like a comedy of errors, coincidence after coincidence creates an inescapable problem the protagonists find themselves in. Momo’s spiritual awakening isn’t just a marker of her own potential but also acts as a tether to her relationship with her grandmother. Nothing is simply used for the purpose of entertainment, whether it be music or the visual storytelling the anime proposes. Turbo Granny’s presence throughout the three episodes not only to add comedy to the ongoing events but also acts out the threat that they cannot escape.

Moreover, Seiko Ayase or Santa Dodoria’s addition to the series brings out the classic mentor figure. While at first glance many of them would be expected to act as stock characters, they do not. Momo is the classic heroine, Okarun is the hero, and Grandma Ayase is the stereotypical mentor. The case couldn’t be any more different.

The Key to Dynamic Storytelling

The fusion of the supernatural with science fiction is a clash of two genres, one thatDandadannails without question. Both the protagonists have different beliefs and neither agree to bend to the other without presented proof. They aren’t just protagonists that stand to act as typical shonen figures.

They are dynamic characters with their own stories to tell even if their lives may now be intertwined. Granny Ayase isn’t just an ordinary mentor to Momo and Okarun. She has her own limitations, those of which she is unafraid to live up to.

The entire series shuffles between comedy and action, making it a blend that is brewed to perfection. Momo’s struggles with newfound powers and her growing attraction to her new friends keep her at the center of a whirling storm. Okarun’s own knack for acting as the comedic relief do not take away his humanistic traits. For a man cursed because of his manhood, he is bound without choice. The series is fast-paced yet it does not feel rushed. It knows the story well and the confidence in telling Tatsu’s tale makes it even better.

The story is what many fans have been demanding from anime for a while now. The adult themes, the horror setting and the comedic showcase of it all. These aspects combined make it such a fun watch, leaving no room for complain when diving intoDandadanis not a task but a stress reliever.
