But why was Murphy not cast as Batman in the first place? Well, after working together with Nolan on several of his movies, the veteran actor got his answer. Why Christian Bale Was Chosen As Batman Instead of Cillian Murphy
There is no doubt that both actors are remarkable in their own nature and genres. With Murphy getting worldwide fame a bit much later on than Christian Bale, the duo faced off against each other in 2005’sBatman Begins.

With Bale portraying Batman and Cillian Murphy portraying Scarecrow, the two actors did a remarkable job. Fans, however, were left with a single question in mind throughout all these years: Why did Christopher Nolan not choose Cillian Murphy as Batman? In an interview withDeadline, veteran director Christopher Nolan finally revealed the reason why he chose to go with Christian Bale instead of Murphy!
“I don’t think he [Murphy] had the physicality at the time. We tested everyone as Bruce Wayne and we tested them as Batman, and the thing that Christian had that was so striking was that he understood that so much of acting is about reality.”

He further continued,
“So much of acting is about emotional truth. And when you put on a costume like the Batsuit, you have to become this icon. Christian had this crazy energy that he just directed. He’d figured out how that worked and what that would be — the way Bruce Wayne does in the film.”

The director ended his talk by remarking thatChristian Bale“tore a hole on the screen as Batman”.As the interview progressed, Nolan also remarked on Cillian Murphy’s iconic showPeaky Blindersand his notoriously famous character Tommy Shelby.

As mentioned above, Murphy found fame at a later stage when he portrayed the role of Thomas Shelby in the iconic BBC seriesPeaky Blinders. As the interview withDeadlinecontinued, Christopher Nolan also talked about his admiration for Murphy’s character!
“But it was interesting watching Peaky Blinders years later and seeing you play Tommy Shelby. Whatever it is we’re talking about here, you’d figured it out. That’s an iconic character with an oppressive presence, where he walks into the room, and everything goes quiet, and he owns that space.”

Although Murphy found fame at a later stage, the actor is now considered one of the most distinguished actors out there. Christian Bale’s 2005 filmBatmanBeginsreceived a rating of 8.2/10 on IMDB and a whopping 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Christopher Nolan film is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
