Are Starfield’s cities technically classified as cities? Even if they’re not, does itreallymatter? These are just some of the questions put forward by theStarfieldcommunity as they debate whether or not the game’s cities are actually…well, cities.
The debate was sparked by Reddit usersxp2h1g, who took to the Starfield subreddit earlier this week to explain why they believe there are actually no cities in the game. But before we get into this player’s reasoning, the context and definition of what a city is needs to be taken into account. According toWorldBank.org, a city usually needs a population of 50,000 inhabitants within a certain radius. However, there isn’t one worldwide standard for what a city is, as various parts of the world will differ on the definition.

How much impact do you really have in Starfield’s galaxy?
According to theUK Parliament website, “City status in the UK can be associated with having a cathedral or a university, a particular form of local government, or having a large population.” But the site also notes that UK city status is granted by the monarch, on the advice of ministers. While the United States is “a matter of a decision by local government,” according toWikipedia.

Starfield Players Debate Over The Game’s Cities
The user that sparked the debate noted that, according to Wikipedia, any location with less than 1,000 inhabitants is classed as a rural area, village, or tribe. They then went on to express how they believe some of Starfield’s most major points of interest, such asNew Atlantis, likely don’t even have more than 300 people living there. Some, however, disagree with the maths.
“How many people can reasonably live here? 300 maybe?” the user said in regards to New Atlantis. Then, when it came to Akila City, they said, “Why is called Akila CITY? How many people can live here possibly? 100 at most?”

Although there were many in support of this argument, withone usercalling New Atlantis “one of the worst and inadequately thought-out ‘cities’”, others strongly disagreed with the maths behind it. “OP has some wild estimates. On that picture of New Atlantis that they shared, a single skyscraper can fit many hundreds of people,” a fellowStarifled player said.
Others opted on the side of entertainment, as opposed to realism. “if New Atlantis was even half the size of Night City it’s not like it would improve the game, it would make it worse,“one usersaid. While another echoed the same sentiment,saying, “yeah having 250,000+ generic NPCs in cities would definitely be a way to improve this game.”

Personally, I’m inclined to agree with the latter here. One of the community’s main complaints with Starfield has been the game’s lifeless NPCs, so I don’t see any real benefit to increasing the number of empty shells walking around. I’ll take more random events and quirky encounters with the NPCs we already have any day.
