A power trio is one of the most important tropes that many prominent anime and manga series implement to establish a decent power scaling within the main characters of the series. It was even used by Kohei Horikoshi for his manga,My Hero Academia, which is one of the greatest manga series of all time and recently saw its conclusion.

The power trio ofMy Hero Academiawas Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, and Shoto Todoroki. They were the strongest students in their class, and they went on to become great superheroes after taking down villains like All for One. However, they were not the main trio that Horikoshi had planned when he startedMy Hero Academia.
The original trio ofMy Hero Academiawas supposed to be Izuku Midoriya, Tenya Iida, and Ochaco Uraraka. But Horikoshi had to make this change because of the growing popularity of Bakugo and Shoto, which resulted in fans demanding more of them in the story. But even Izuku, Shoto, and Bakugo didn’t turn out to be a great trio.

The original trio ofMy Hero Academia
WhileKohei Horikoshinever officially confirmed this,My Hero Academia’soriginal protagonists were supposed to be Izuku, Ochaco, and Iida. This was proved by the initial storyline that was portrayed inMy Hero Academia. Izuku met Ochaco and Iida during the U.A. Entrance Exam and quickly became friends with the two of them.
After Tobey Maguire’s Train Scene Inspired Horikoshi, Spider-Man and My Hero Academia Worlds Crossed Paths Again
Ochaco saved Izuku from falling headfirst on the pavement, and later on he saved Ochaco from a giant robot and in the process destroyed his hands and legs and thusbecame good friends. In the case of Iida, their initial interaction was not that pleasant, but as they moved forward, they developed a nice bond between them, which initially became the highlight ofMy Hero Academia.
However, as the narrative progressed, the bond between the trio slightly faded off as Izuku moved forward with his training and passion to become a great superhero, and the two of them stayed in their individual plots. They lost the love that they gained from fans, and they started focusing on other significantMy Hero Academiacharacters.

Bakugo and Shoto’s popularity made them stand with Izuku
One of the main reasons why Izuku, Ochaco, and Iida didn’t work was because Shoto and Bakugo started getting popular within theMy Hero Academiafandom. Thus, Horikoshi had no choice but to include them within the narrative and make them the new trio of the series.
I wholeheartedly agree Horikoshi was setting them up but Todoroki and Bakugo got popularhttps://t.co/XYOirZpARx

In fact, during an interview withAnime News Network, Horikoshi revealed that he was shocked to see Bakugo becoming popular.
He stated:
Bakugo has been a bit of a surprise. I assumed everyone would hate him, but it’s been the opposite. In the character questionnaires we do, Bakugo comes in #1 most popular.
Bakugo and Shoto’s popularity forced Horikoshi’s hand as he had to make them even more relevant to the story and the only way to do this was to include them along with Izuku and make them the power trio ofMy Hero Academia.

“That’s a tough question”: My Hero Academia’s Kohei Horikoshi Originally Saw Eiichiro Oda and Goku on the Same Level as the Greatest Heroes of All Time
However, it didn’t work out so well because while the three characters were excellent individually, they could not synchronize themselves to work together. This is why in the end Horikoshi decided to give them their own conclusions.
My Hero Academiais available to watch on Crunchyroll.
