Taylor Sheridan began a Western renaissance withYellowstone, but he can’t seem to keep up with his own creation’s ambition. The world of cowboys and ranches in the Mountain West countryside of Montana has been an entertaining ride for the past seven years.

But with an ending that promises more disappointments than closures, it begs the question – is Sheridan really the promised savior and patron saint of modern neo-Westerns or did he simply happen to stumble upon a good idea that stretched on for far too long?

The arc that Kelly Reilly has been assigned to portray holds the answer to that concerning question.

Yellowstonehas been chock full of surprises when it comes to family politics. Aside from Beth and Jaime’s eternal, hellish war, there has been enough controversy to keep the series afloat in the drama department. Consequently, it would doTaylor Sheridangood if he toned down the sibling rivalry, for a change. But Sheridan has clearly resorted to making Beth his one-trick pony.

After five seasons, the bitter bickering turning into an all-out war is just too much of a good thing. The audience is then forced to question the legitimacy of an Oscar-nominated writer if he cannot keep a character as complex as Beth Dutton entertaining past a certain point. Witnessing the downfall ofKelly Reilly‘s arc has now become one of the saddest tragedies ofYellowstone.

From her over-the-top antics regarding Jaime to her raging meltdowns in the name of repressed trauma to cringe-worthy fistfights, every scene involving Beth Dutton plays like an overdone act that has been used one too many times. Her arc was supposed to be intimidating and radically distinct but Sheridan’s writing has made her insufferable and laughably unrealistic instead.

The Stupidity of Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton

The pop culture dialogue surrounding Beth Dutton’s feminine rage and her power-hungry ambition is as misleading and redundant as a lighthouse for the blind. Her personality is not built to inspire the audience or evoke sympathy but to show the destructive nature of repressed trauma and dysfunctional childhood.

For all her one-liners and tough-talking shrewdness, Beth drowns in self-pity and her own past memories despite loathing every vulnerable character she meets throughout the whole series. Simply put, if Beth Dutton were to meet herself, she would tear into her for being such an easy prey to manipulate. Taylor Sheridan contradicts himself when it comes to constructing Kelly Reilly’s character arc and fans have noticed it too.

“Women won’t like her”: Kelly Reilly Was Nearly Made to “Tone Down” Beth Dutton’s Fire-Breathing Siren in Yellowstone

As succinctly put by aReddit user,“Beth is unbelievably stupid in season 5… Her entire act was just dumb.”While the Season 5 narrative arc rushes to a close, Kelly Reilly’s character regresses further into a destructive shell of her own making. The Reddit comment further goes on to say:

She basically told Jamie they were going to treat him like shit for the next four years then discard him. If you don’t have a carrot, you cannot use a stick. There needs to be some incentive to compliance or you won’t get anywhere. Any idiot with a basic grasp of how to manage people would know that.

YellowstoneSeason 5 is set to mark the end of the saga that started it all. The sun will set on the Dutton legacy for one final time while multiple loose ends remain unsolved, adding to the frustration of watching countless minutes wasted on yet another Beth & Jaime fight. As of today, Taylor Sheridan is officially too late to redeem Kelly Reilly’s character even if he devotes the final five episodes to her relationship with Wes Bentley’s Jaime Dutton.

YellowstoneSeason 5 Part 2 is streaming exclusively on Paramount+ with new episodes coming out every Sunday.
