Ghosts in video games have been around for an extremely long time which can be shown by Pac-Man’s primary enemy. The ghost is used in many renditions with it mainly working as an enemy that the player must go up against, but this is not always the case as some games have players becoming a ghost themselves.

9F. E. A. R.

F.E.A.R. was primarily marketed as a horror game and while there are a lot of horror elements to the game, it serves as more of a first-person shooter than anything else. The game focuses on a scary little ghost girl as the main antagonist of the game. The player will have many experiences where it looks like there is a jump scare only for nothing to happen.

F.E.A.R. has a lot of false setups in how it scares players. This helps because players will never really know when the game is going to try to scare them and when it is messing with them. Well, it helps if the player enjoys the added suspense.

5Luigi’s Mansion Series

Leave it to Nintendo to create a game about hunting ghosts that creates a silly atmosphere instead of one full of debilitating horror. TheLuigi’s Mansiongames take place in different haunted locations with Luigi’s Mansion 3 actually taking place inside a haunted hotel instead of a haunted mansion.

The games never really present a ton of variety in the different ghost types, but the different rooms keep players searching for different ways to take out ghosts. The boss variety is also nicely done as they all have fun mechanics like the shark in Luigi’s Mansion 3 which also possesses a pirate ship.

Phasmophobia VR Ghost

Pacify has many game modes that accompany it but one of the main game modes that the game was marketed on was the player versus everyone mode which can be done either by someone playing alone or by someone playing with teammates. In this game mode, players will have to find a way to pacify the evil of the little ghost girl.

The game has it so that as more events occur the ghost girl roaming the house will switch between good and evil. The levels are comprised of large houses with tight maze-like corridors that will get the players lost and trapped in the clutches of the evil that lies in the house.

The characters are constantly communicating with one another and the player will have to choose different dialogue options that are bound to create some rifts in the different relationships that the main character, Alex, has with the other characters in the game like her new stepbrother, Jonas.

The game takes a human approach to tragedy as it is a game that is as much about ghosts as it is about the pain that comes with dying.

1The Medium

The Mediumtakes a split screen and turns it into an otherworldly single-player experience. The split screen in this game isn’t used for competitive multiplayer but rather used to show the player in both the normal world and the spirit realm. The spirit realm will usually contain some spiritual threat that the player will face or something to uncover.

The main antagonistic spirit, The Maw, that follows the protagonist, Marianne, through different parts of the direction of the game is chilling as players get to see it evolve from a threat in the spiritual realm to one that is able to also come into Marianne’s real life.
