Dragon Age: The Veilguardhas an incredibly in-depth character creator with a wide range of customization options. Among some very important choices, such as yourlineageand your class, is the choice of faction, of which there are six to choose from.

BioWare Announces Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s First Patch

Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s name is still a mouthful, but a few are things are being fixed.

With each faction comes a great deal more than simply being part of a specific group; it allows your character to be not only a present – but also a past – participant in the world with deep roots, which is a massive win as far as immersion is concerned.

So, let’s take a look at how these factions hold up against one another.

6Mourn Watch

Necromancer Central

Associated Companion

Emmrich Volkarin

Most Notable Trait

Acute Afflictions: you can apply an additional affliction stack on targets

The fact that the Mourn Watch is first up on this list is by no means a way of saying they’re a bad faction to pick. They are wonderful in the most macabre way possible.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Necropolis Halls

However, being afaction centered around necromancy, it is very difficult to make them unique when this type of faction – along with the notion of necromancers in general – pervades fantasy to its very core.

Thus, the aspirational armor sets, while in theme with the objectives of the Mourn Watch, are expected. That said, even though they are very edgy and very cool, there is one faction in particular that simply does that slightly better, and with a bit more finesse.

5Antivan Crows

Edgy Assassins? Sign Me Up!

Lucanis Dellamorte

Hidden Pouch: holds an extra potion

TheAntivan Crowsare edgy. They are incredibly cool. They look amazing. However, just as the Mourn Watch falls into a bit of an expected archetype, so too do the Crows.

Sharp blades and sturdy bows are what win battles, my friends!

A ruthless faction made up of assassins who work to fight their oppressorswhile remaining in the shadows is, without a doubt, a staple of any fantasy universe, much like a faction of necromancers. Making them unique in some way is a difficult task.

But, a group of assassins is not necessarily bound to a certain aesthetic in the same way a group of necromancers is bound to some kind of skull and bone aesthetic.

That said, theCrows' aspirational armor sets are phenomenal. The chic and shiny blue, coupled with the black crow feathers (a beautiful representation of their name),allows them to edge the Mourn Watch out on this list.

On top of that, their Hidden Pouch trait is a great boonto have no matter what class you’re playing, but it becomes less valuable as the game rolls on, and you’ve upgraded the healing abilities of your chosen companions to be more effective.

4Lords of Fortune

Did Someone Say, Treasure Hunting?

Relentless: perform takedowns on enemies with slightly less effort

The Lords of Fortune are a mix of Indiana Jones and Robin Hood.Expert treasure hunters and thieves of fortunes, typically from the rich, this ragtag faction is the most free-spirited of them all.

While it is easy to misconstrue them as simple pirates or bounty hunters, they are far more than that, and this is explored throughout the game itself, which is awesome to see.

But, even though their traits aren’t the most exciting, theyeasilymake up for this withtheir aspirational armor, which is absolutely glorious.

Despite that, as fun and noble as the Lords of Fortune are, it’s difficult to compare their overall job and goals to most other factions, landing them where they are on the list.

3Grey Wardens

Blight-killing Specialists

Vigilant Training: base defense and health are slightly increased

The Grey Wardens act almost as the heart and soul of the factions, asthey are at the center of combating the Blight and the darkspawnbirthed by it. They are driven by their mission, and all have an unmistakable purpose.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard: 13 Essential Beginner Tips

If you want to step up and lead your band of heroes, you’ll need to know a thing or two.

They even have a bit of a cultish aura about them, considering they all “undergo secret, unbreakable rites.” The long and short of this is thatthey receive magical powers via the Blight to help them fight the Blight(among other monsters). Fighting fire with fire and whatnot.

With all that in mind, what prevents the Grey Wardens from ranking higher on this list is mainly their aspirational armor. While the simple, knight-like medieval-themed garb makes sense considering what they are, compared to most of the other armor sets, this one simply lacks visual appeal.

Furthermore (but less important),their Vigilant Training trait, while good for all classes in theory, is more meant forwarriors andis less than ideal compared to other traits for roguesand mages.

2Shadow Dragons

For The Resistance!

Neve Gallus

Resourceful:your class-specific resource regenerates slightly faster

As far as the Shadow Dragons are concerned, their work has been cut out for them in Minrathous. Constantlyfighting to keep several factions – namely the Venatori – in checkwhen the Templars are caught slacking is one hell of a job.

They are essentially a resistance group, and being part of one of those is always fun and drives home a very specific player fantasy.

While not the best of the bunch, their aspiration armor sets is nothing to sneeze at with their sleek and formal look.

But, the importance of the Shadow Dragons as they relate to the Venatori, one of the main factions of enemies we face in the game, along with what they fight for (and against), gets them a higher spot on this list than most.

Also, their resourceful trait is lovelyno matter what class you take.

1Veil Jumpers

Just Protecting Reality… No Big Deal

Bellara Lutare

Keen Eye: deal slightly increased critical and weakpoint damage

Being a group founded by elves but accepting of all others, theVeil Jumpers’primary purpose is to seek out and contain ancient artifacts that threaten the very fabric of reality due to their unstable and powerful energies.

From an aesthetic viewpoint, their aspirational armor sets are all very explorer-codedand down to earth in their design, allowing you to take on the appearance of someone who appears well-traveled and isn’t overly concerned with the finer things in life, which is refreshing in many ways.

Also, their Keen Eye trait isalso quite useful, regardless of which class you take, making the Veil Jumpers a great pick overall. However, they top off this list mainly due to the sheer gravity of their job, as making sure reality doesn’t explode seems like something worth doing.

They don’t fight forone or two factions in particular; rather, they fight for the world as a whole, makingtheir motives the most honorable of the bunch… if not slightly tainted by the pursuit of knowledge.
