Summer is almost over in the northern hemisphere, and that sadness is lingering around. While kids are dreading going back to school, Battlefield vets and newcomers are mourning the end of theBattlefield 6open beta. And yet, it’sBattlefield 2042that I feel bad about now.

The lights have yet to dim on the stage, but people are already saying good riddance to one of EA’s most troubled children in the Battlefield franchise. The heavy atmosphere has not gotten in the way of the development team though, and it has prepped a big surprise for fans of the game.

Battlefield 6 Battle Pass

Battlefield 2042 update 9.2.0is a stoppage time surge to inject some life into the game before Battlefield 6 sucks the air out of it whenit releases on October 10. The surprise patch comes with new weapons, new aircraft, and the return of one of the coolest maps ever since Battlefield 1942.

Battlefield 2042 Update 9.2.0

The final update for Battlefield 2042 is available on all platforms, and it injects some life into the game to try and keep players entertained until Battlefield 6 is out. It’s not like you have a choice either, as the open beta program is over.

Infantry gets two new guns to play with, and the selection is pretty esoteric. The first is the KFS2000 bullpup assault rifle, modelled on the futuristic-looking FN F2000 that looked cool but was a commercial flop. It is a very controllable weapon, which makes it fit for use in most tactical situations.

The second weapon added is the Lynx, an elegant 12.7x99mm bullpup anti-materiél rifle developed by Hungarian company Sero International. Unlike most heavy rifles that are bolt-actuated, the Lynx is a semi-automatic gun, so you can rain a lot of hate onto vehicles, structures, and people.

The flyboys of Battlefield 2042 are getting some timeless classics in the attack aircraft lineup: the American A-10 Warthog and the Russian Su-25TM. It’s a little terrifying to think what state those jets are in if they haven’t been retired by 2042, but I digress. Both will pack guided weapons to deal with armor, on top of their 30mm cannons.

A New, Old Map

The tiny volcano island of Iwo Jima returns once more, after its introduction in Battlefield 1942. This map will have reinforced positions on the northern end, but with the airfield left to fight for in the southeast. The island is heavily fortified, making it a meat grinder in multiplayer.

Battlefield 2042’s version of Iwo Jima has a twist—the volcano on the island is active. You’ll have to make sure not to get distracted during a firefight unless you feel like being barbecued out of nowhere. The new map dimensions are 700x200.

A New Battlepass

The aptly-named Road to Battlefield Battlepass has been added to the game, and will be available from August 18th until October 7th. It has a total of 60 free tiers, and consists primarily of items from different Battlefield games leading up to Battlefield 6.

Players planning to jump into the new game once it’s out will be happy to hear that there are 30 rewards in the battlepass that will carry over to Battlefield 6 on launch.
