That’s right; speaking with the dead is entirely possible in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it’s one of the more unique game mechanics available to the player. Of course, it’s likely not available straight from the start of the game, and players will require an item or spell to converse with the souls of the lost.
Updated by Brandon Morgan on June 13, 2025: We’ve included additional information on how to speak with dead foes using the Disguise Self spell to trick the enemy, along with how to cast it properly alongside Speak with the Dead to unlock the dialogue option.

The first method to speak with the dead in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the most accessible option. The Speak with Dead spell allows characters to converse with a corpse that still has a mouth, but they may only answer five questions. To unlock the spell, players require level 3 Necromancy, and it’s only available to the following classes:
Alongside casting the Speak with Dead skill using the requirements mentioned above, players can also use the following methods:
Furthermore, there is a recovery phase after casting Speak with Dead, so it’s often best to set up a camp nearby to allow the entire party a chance to rest and recuperate.
The Amulet Of Lost Voices
The second most common way to converse with the dead in Baldur’s Gate 3 is via The Amulet of Lost Voices, a unique amulet acquired in Act 1. To find the legendary amulet that allows players to speak with dead individuals, explore the Dank Crypt located near the beach.
Inside the Dank Crypt, players will want to locate the secret room. It’s tucked into a triangular corner, near some bookshelves and intricately-patterned pots, and requires a Perception Check to uncover. Once the check is passed, players will discover a button to open the secret door. Unfortunately, in doing so, players also unleash a horde of enemies, namely undead, that must be dealt with first.
Tip: It’s easy to deal with the undead scribes by forcing them to squeeze into the entrance of the secret room, then take them down one at a time.
Once the encounter is finished, enter the secret chamber to discover a sarcophagus. Attempting to open the crypt will begin a conversation with the hooded skeleton, pictured above, but then players can find The Amulet of Lost Voices within the heavy chest nearby. Any party member may use the amulet, and it will grant Speak with Dead.

Now, with the Speak with Dead spell available for at least one party member, it’s time to start a conversation with a corpse.
Unfortunately, not every dead body in Baldur’s Gate 3 can speak with. Certain restrictions exist, like players cannot communicate with the undead, only inanimate corpses lying around the ground.Furthermore, the corpse must still have a mouth, so no headless bodies. Lastly, players must control the character casting the Speak with Dead spell.
With these restrictions in mind, players may cast a spell on a potential body and then await their response. You see, the body may not wish to speak with the party. In that case, they will not respond whatsoever.Or, the body may trigger a conversation in which the player may ask up to five questions, including a few quest-specific questions.
Baldur’s Gate 3 features no shortage ofexceptional spellsand cantrips designed for almost any situation imaginable. One such spell,Disguise Self, may prove extremely useful when sneaking past guards or avoiding combat, but it has an additional use that most players likely won’t even consider.
Players cantrick a recently deceased foeinto speaking with the party. Typically speaking, after killing an enemy, that enemy won’t speak with the player as they are their murderer. But, if players cast Disguise Self and then talk with the dead foe, they can ask the usual questions because the fallen enemy doesn’t realize he’s speaking with his killer. It’s a fantastic trick that can open up a few doors and unlock some secrets when used correctly.
You cannot use the normal Speak with the Dead spell before casting Disguise Self.Use Disguise Self first, then cast Speak with the Dead.
