Who Is Gerringothe Thorm?

Gerringothe is a special undead enemy, cursed by her greed. She roams theRethwin Tollhouse, demanding more gold from any who would wander in. The tollhouse is an optional area, so unless you’re looking to take her down, it’s best to avoid a fight you’re underprepared to begin.

In addition to a vast health pool, she can’t be surprised and has a boost to initiative. Despite being undead, she is completelyimmune toTurn Undead’s effects. Also, she has two bonus actions every turn, which she will use to attack you more often. Last of all, and the most important attack you need to know:Jealous Avarice. This is a devastating attack that Thorm will use to target a character and deal8d12 damage per 500 gold that character is carrying. This will easily down any character it strikes if they possess the party’s coin.

How To Prepare For The Fight

On entering the Reithwin Tollhouse, you’ll notice three things: firstly, there is someone being very loud andangry on the second floor; Secondly, there arepiles of goldjust lying around; and thirdly, there are a bunch ofsad floating skullshanging around. All of these things are important. While you can’t do anything about the third problem yet, you can manage the first and second.

The shouting from the second floor is your clue tostart sneaking; you have a lot to do before getting spotted. The skulls are key to this fight, but you can’t harm them until combat begins. The coin piles on the ground play into Gerringothe’s coin gimmick, and she will use them to attack you. She can turn these piles into acoin-based spiritual weapon— or set them todetonate. Before the fight begins, you should have your stealthiest party member sneak around, with invisibility if you can, and have themcollect all the gold piles.

The rest of your party members should stay out of sight. You’ll face avariety of damage typesin the upcoming fight, butpsychic damageis the most common. If you have elixirs of psychic resistance, start handing them out. Elixirs to resist fire, poison, and necrotic damage can help too; just remember that each party member can only have one active elixir. Last of all, and it bears repeating —send all of your gold to your camp. Do not keep it on you.

Focus On Gerringothe’s Visages First

Once combat begins Gerringothe’s visages will be susceptible to damage. While Gerringothe has a lot of health, it’s thevisages you need to take down. The visages will attempt to keep away from you, hitting you with ranged magical damage and inflicting you with status effects.

For every visage you destroy, Gerringothe’s health maximum decreases by 100.

Ranged attacks are helpful here because the visages tend to flee to higher ground, and Gerringothe herself tries to pull you out of position with coin whips. UsingBlessto boost your party’s saving throws will prevent you from being afflicted by statuses.Fearin particular you want to avoid because it will immobilize you, and you’ll want to end the fight quickly. Push the visages together as much as you can, then hit them with yourstrongest AoEor multi-target attacks.

Once the visages are all gone, Gerringothe will have only six health to her name. Any attack at this point will kill her, and the fight will be yours. Enjoy the rewards, as you could probably tell she had a bit of gold on her.
