Declaration of War - Eren as Attack Titan in Marley

20Declaration Of War (Episode 64)

The first few episodes of Attack on Titan took us to Marley, introducing us to Falco, Gabi, and several other new characters. However, it was Episode 64 that gave us the first look at the grown-up Eren, who was living in the country as a war veteran. We learn that Eren has been using Falco to communicate with his friends on Paradis Island.

On top of that, Eren finally confronts Reiner for the crimes he committed against Eldians all those years back. Unexpectedly, Reiner gets down on his knees to accept his fate, but Eren wants to punish everyone on the island. So, after years of break, we finally see MAPPA’s version of Attack Titan, making it one of the best episodes of the series.

To You, in 2000 Years The Fall of Shiganshina - Eren’s mother’s death

19To You, In 2000 Years: The Fall Of Shiganshina (Episode 1)

It’s the episode that started it all with the destruction of Eren’s home. The episode introduces us to the legendary trio, who wished for nothing but to explore the world outside of the walls. However, the Colossal Titan’s arrival changed everything for Eren.

Shiganshina was overrun by the Titans, and no one inside the walls was brave or experienced enough to defeat the enemy. Eren had to see his mother getting eaten alive by a titan, and that particular incident made Eren what he is in Season 4.

Ymir and Historia, Attack On Titan

18Historia (Episode 30)

This episode affords crucial insight into the backstory of several characters—mainly Christa/Historia and Ymir. Most of the episode features an expository flashback, back to when the Scouts were training in the mountains as cadets. Ymir, Christa, and a minor character named Daz were lost in a blizzard, with Daz being incapacitated. After Ymir inexplicably saves Daz from the blizzard, she promises to tell Christa how Daz was saved if Christa reveals her true name.

After a transition to the present, Ymir—who always kept her true name—also reveals her “true” self: that she secretly has a Titan form. After defending her comrades at Utgard Castle, Christa keeps her promise and confides her true name, Historia, to an injured Ymir.

That Day

17That Day (Episode 57)

We learned very little about Titan’s history in the first two seasons. Well, Episode 57 of the series changes that by showing the entire journey of Grisha Yeager, Eren’s father. We see each moment from Grisha’s previous life that made him hate Marley. Apart from that, the episode reveals how Grisha tried to force his morals upon his first child, Zeke.

Interestingly, this was the first time we saw the world outside the walls. It was more devastating to witness Marley’s hatred towards the Eldians, specifically when a Marleyan soldier killed Grisha’s sister.

Scouts disguised as Marleyans in suits

16The Dawn of Humanity (Episode 87)

Most of this episode features a series of flashbacks, whereby the Scouts attempt to subtly engage in international diplomacy. Some of the Scouts go to a Marleyan coastal city in disguise to liaise with Kiyomi, the ambassador for the Azumabito clan, and meet with a potential allied group, the Subjects of Ymir Protection Group. First, however, they encounter an immigrant pickpocket and protect him from the crowd; later on, they find the child among other displaced migrants, and they share a night drinking with these people.

As far as diplomacy goes, Kiyomi informs the Scouts that anti-Eldian sentiment is still rampant. Even the so-called Subjects of Ymir Protection Group are vaguely sympathetic towards Eldians but hateful towards the Eldians on Paradis. With international hatred of Eldians clear to Eren, he becomes committed to his plan: to deceive Zeke and commence the Rumbling.

15First Battle: The Struggle For Trost (Episode 5)

It was this episode that made fans realize that Attack on Titan is unlike any other show they’ve watched on television. We all saw Eren training for days so he could defeat the Titans inside the walls. Finally, Eren gets that opportunity in the fifth episode when Colossal Titan suddenly appears behind him.

Initially, most fans thought, “Oh! This is great. We’ll finally see Eren killing some Titans.” Well, after a few seconds, we see Eren getting eaten alive by a bearded Titan. Of course, that scene came as a massive shock for viewers who didn’t read the manga, making them realize that it’s better to throw their predictions out the window while watching Attack on Titan.

14Crushing Blow: The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission, Part 5 (Episode 21)

We all remember when the Female Titan made an appearance in the first season. The mystery around this new sentient being kept us on edge for several episodes. Levi had his own plans to catch the Female Titan without sacrificing Eren; however, the Captain was ready to sacrifice the rest of his team only to lure the Titan into the forest. Unfortunately, Levi’s plan failed, and the Female Titan butchered every member of his squad, which was enough to pull the cord in Eren.

Seeing his mates die at the hands of another Titan, Eren transforms into Attack Titan and goes berserk. Eren’s aggression and screams in that episode were enough to send chills down our spines. Also, Female Titan defeating Eren is another reason why we can’t forget about this episode from the series.

13Savagery (Episode 73)

Levi Ackerman’s first fight with the Beast Titan is one of the best scenes in anime history. Well, we get the much-awaited second round of Levi and Zeke’s fight in Season 4. After the Beast Titan reveals his true intentions, Levi finds himself surrounded by several mindless Titans. Zeke uses this opportunity to escape from the forest so he can meet his half-brother, Eren.

At first, fans thought that this was the end of the road for Levi; however, Ackerman butchered every single Titan in front of him to stop Zeke. Honestly, it was really satisfying to see Zeke running away scared from an Eldian who can’t even transform into a Titan. Finally, we see Ackerman overwhelming the Beast Titan one more time, making “Savagery” one of the best Attack on Titan episodes.

12Midnight Sun (Episode 55)

This highly intense episode features the aftermath of two crucial characters enduring near-death experiences. Erwin was severely injured in his charge on the Beast Titan, whereas Armin’s whole body was scorched black from the Colossal Titan’s breath weapon. Two analytical leaders are on the verge of death at the same time—each having selflessly sacrificed themselves by their own respective plans—and yet there is only one vial of Zeke’s spinal fluid that could revitalize them as Titans.

Eren and Mikasa use force and intimidation to coerce Levi into injecting Armin with the spinal fluid; both Levi and Hange, however, wish to use the injection on Erwin, given that they are closer to him (and given their argument that he is the more experienced leader). Although tensions slowly fade, allowing Levi to use the serum on Erwin, Levi pities his commander and opts to inject Armin. Aside from the tensions, this also sets up the soft, empathetic Armin to be the devastating Colossal Titan.

11Assault (Episode 66)

Eren declared war on Marley in this episode of Attack on Titan. The War Hammer Titan did everything in its power to prevent Attack Titan from killing countless people in Marley, but there was no stopping Eren in this episode. After getting impaled from the War Hammer Titan’s hardened crystals, Eren leaves his current Attack Titan body and instantly creates another one — a trick we saw Eren using for the first time in the series. Armin also uses his Colossal Titan form to turn the tide in favor of Eren.

Defeating an opponent is one thing, but Eren disgraces Jaw Titan in this episode. It was the first time in the series that we saw Eren more of as a Villain than a hero.
