As it turns out, this very movie, which has often been described as one of the most cynical movies of his entire star-studded career, appeared as a“whodunit”to Spielberg when he first came across it. But as he came down to transforming it into a live-action work, the mastermind even realized that the film is more along the lines of“wishful thinking”rather than a“cynical story.“

Steven Spielberg Originally Sported a Different Take onMinority Report

StarringTom Cruisein the lead as its primary protagonist,Minority Reporttells the story of John Anderton, who is a PreCrime police member. PreCrime is an organization that stops future crimes before they even occur with the help of the 3 ‘PreCogs’ who can foresee them. But as simple as it all seems, things turn differently when Cruise’s character finds himself framed for a future murder.

That said, this action/science-fiction was full of thrilling twists and turns and had fans constantly at the edge of their seats, with a majority of the credit going to the brilliant filmmaking chops ofSteven Speilberg. But when it comes to the director’s personal opinion of this mysterious piece of work, he originally admitted it was like a“whodunit”to him and expected it to be his most cynical work.

“It still holds its own against any movie or TV show made today”: Steven Spielberg Made Band of Brothers ‘Future-Proof’ With 1 Decision That Didn’t Make Sense Back Then

During an interview withWIRED, theJawshelmer shared his original reaction to getting acquainted with the source material, saying:

At its core the movie is a whodunit. It’s actually a whodunit-to-me. I responded immediately to that. And then, I responded to the myriad possibilities of creating a future that is not too distant, yet with the kind of technologies we can only dream about but wish we had now.

However, with the passage of time and as he got done with making the movie, Spielberg realized thathe couldn’t have been more wrongabout his original take on the material. If anything, following the release of the movie, the filmmaker himself admitted that he had been wrong to have even expected this film to be“the most cynical film”he had ever made.

Steven Spielberg Admits His Original Opinion Was Wrong

During the same interview, Spielberg continued to admit how wrong he was in his initial opinion of the film. Not only that, he further shed light on his thoughts on why he believes he was wrong. Getting candid with WIRED, he said:

I was wrong. It changed. Because, well, it’s not cynical to want to believe that there could be a miracle – that they could stop people from killing in the future.

That being said, the filmmaker also let out how he feelsthe movie no longer felt like a cynical story, but rather, more along the lines of“wishful thinking.”He said:

So in a sense, it went from being a cynical story to being a movie about wishful thinking.

While that’s that, it can’t be denied that the movie has indeed gotten him quite a bit more inclined to the dark side. But as long as Spielberg is okay with how it turned out to be, all is fine.
