The esteemed tower defense gacha franchise, Arknights, is gearing towards an upcoming spin-off, and the technical tests conducted earlier in the year for the open-world RPG reportedly went swimmingly. The main takeaway from these workshops targeted the game’s core elements, retaining the RPG mechanics players love while adding a hefty factory-like base builder.

Expected to release between mid-to-late 2024, Arknights: Endfield will be gracing PS5 consoles, PC, and mobile devices, and it will be a free-to-play debut for the fandom. Since the testing period in January, developer Hypergryph has been hard at work fine-tuning the new mechanics that will elevate gameplay tenfold, and there’s a balance between genres that players are encouraged to manage.

Arknights: Endfield Blends Immersive RPG With A New Base Builder

In a recentinterviewwith GamesRadar, the Arknights: Endfield development team was asked several questions regarding the spin-off’s base builder addition. Already being an expansive game, the developer believed adding a base builder mode would give players a “stronger sense of accomplishment as they get deeper and master a core gameplay mechanic.” The addition was also a notion to negate “repetitive content”, which is a glaring challenge most devs face when developing a game.

The team was asked what the added mechanic should be filed under, offering a base builder or factory sim label. However, the devs shared that they had the “opportunity to change things” while the game was still under development, and to manage expectations, no concrete tag was given to the base builder mechanic.

Additionally, the devs were asked how players divide their time between gameplay modes, referring to the open-world RPG mechanics alongside the base builder. “As for players' time commitment, we are trying to achieve a 50:50 ratio between the RPG elements and the factory portion. But players are free to adjust this ratio for their own Arknights: Endfield experience.” Aiming for a middle ground between the two modes plays it safe, but it’s good to know this balance can be tailored to an individual player’s gameplay needs.

The benefits of utilizing the base builder was another point raised, and the team confirmed that “such bases are capable of supplying players with progression, adventure, or factory building items more quickly. Players will need to build up their bases if they want better items as well.” Players were encouraged by the devs to “make the attempt and learn how to build a base” to satisfy their “basic resource needs”.
