Bleak Sword DX, an enhanced version of the dark fantasy action game Bleak Sword, will release for PC and Switch in 2023. The original Bleak Sword is an Apple Arcade exclusive, released in 2019.

In Bleak Sword, the player takes on the role of a knight who battles nightmarish creatures. The unique twist of Bleak Sword is that combat takes place across stages that are like boxed vignettes. This allows a beautiful expression of the game’s art style, which feels entirely unique. Also included are side-scrolling horse sections and Souls-like combat, in other words, you’ll be dodge-rolling. The game is easy to pick up and scales with difficulty throughout.

While Bleak Sword DX has yet to receive a release date, there is currently a demo available as part of Steam Next Fest. The “DX” addition isn’t for aesthetics as the title is looking to expand on the content supplied by the original. The game is getting a beefy graphical upgrade with the addition of depth of field and post-processing that makes each stage pop that little bit more.

Two new game modes are also being added to the enhanced version, which introduces new stages and enemy encounters. The two new modes are “randomizer,” which randomly selects stages and enemies for endless replayability, and “boss rush,” which works like similar modes, having players tackle the bosses in succession. Finally, the game will have improved artificial intelligence as players will now have finer control of their own character thanks to the switch from mobile to controller.

Bleak Sword DX is being developed by more8bit and published by Devolver Digital. As outlined above, there is no confirmed release date, but thedemo is available to play here.
