Another Crab’s Treasure is similar to most Souls-like games in that your chosen armor and skills can greatly influence just how manageable your journey will ultimately be.

For your main character, Kril the hermit crab, choosing the right shells he wears throughout the experience can lead to much greater success in combat.

Jedi Survivor, The Surge 2 and Remnant 2

Yes, Another Crab’s Treasure is aSouls-like that’s easier than its inspiration, but being prepared is still never a bad thing. Kril is also one ofthe best video game characters of 2024, so let’s aim to keep him safe.

10 Best Souls-likes For Beginners

Luckily, not every game in the genre is brutally difficult, and there are some that can get you integrated with it a bit more smoothly.

Shells have two purposes in Another Crab’s Treasure. Not only do they give Kril much-needed defensive stat boosts compared to him just running around in the nude, but each also comes with an additional special Umami power that can be triggered with the square button at the expense of his available Umami charges.

Another Crab’s Treasure Bartholomew Shell

With 69 shells to choose from, landing on the best ones can take a lot of trial and error to see what suits your play-style best. Let’s take some of that guesswork out and highlight the 10 shells in Another Crab’s Treasure that will have you conquering your undersea foes in no time.

While shells come in three different weight classes, we will mostly focus on Medium and Large options here. Situationally, Small shells can be great for those keen to have some more freedom of movement, but generally, the added defensive benefit of Medium and Large is too advantageous to pass up in a world where damage prevention is critical.

Bombs Away!

Umami Cost

First Location

Purchased From Shellfish Desires In New Carcinia

The only small-weight shell to crack the top 10, Bartholomew has decent HP for its weight-class and comes with a gnarly +5 to Kril’s attack stat.

Bombs Away! is a handy Umami skill to use in a pinch when Bartholomew’s HP is low. Kril will launch into the air as Bartholomew self-destructs into an AOE blaze of glory to damage any nearby enemies.

Another Crab’s Treasure Detergent Cap Shell

Red Is Sus

Smokescreen

Paying homage to another indie hit, the Impostor shell is an Among Us character that tags along for Kril’s underwater escapades. Boasting a solid HP total of 130 and another lovely +5 boost to Kril’s attack power, Impostor is a beneficial mix of offense and defense with its passive stats.

For added evasion, this shell comes with Smokescreen, allowing Kril to scamper away from enemies in a cloud of squid-like ink. Smokescreen can be a bit hit-and-miss in terms of effectiveness, but is a nice skill to have alongside Impostor’s other traits when used correctly.

Another Crab’s Treasure Mouse Shell

8Detergent Cap

It’s Laundry Day

The Old Ocean - Bleached Glade

Not found until the latter tenth of the game, the detergent cap is the best shell to feature the Pop Off skill and is worth the wait. With a hefty HP bar and another significant boost to Kril’s attack stat, this shell can be devastating.

Pop Off requires Kril to get up close and personal in order to trigger its spinning melee attack, but the payoff is worth the risk when used with some extra caution.

Saving You With Clicks

Shellshock

The Unfathom - Hermit’s Plateau

Shellshock is a skill encountered early on in the game with the tin can shell, but the mouse found much later on in The Unfathom eventually becomes the best shell to feature this skill.

Dualshockers Definitives: Best Souls-Likes Of 2024

Looking for a challenge. 2024 was more than happy to oblige.

Though the mouse doesn’t come with any type of stat boost, Shellshock is a great defensive maneuver to have, electrifying Kril’s shell and causing serious damage to anyone that gets too close.

6Dumptruck

Keep Rolling, Rolling

Flotsam Vale - Mag-Rail Platform

Hopping into the dumptruck shell and rolling around the map is adorable and one of the most fun ways to travel in Another Crab’s Treasure, but it has further benefits beyond this as well. With a whopping 230 HP, it might as well be a tank.

Rollout is a fun to master Umami skill that can be used for either quick traversal/distance closing, or to launch Kril at full speed into his next poor victim of underwater roadkill.

5Boxing Glove

Have A Fighting Chance

Flotsam Vale - Company Town

The boxing glove has a worse-than-usual weight to HP ratio, but the +5 attack it brings to the table combined with the absolutely devastating Squash skill make this a shell that’s hard to overlook.

Squash serves as a brutal ground-pound attack that can absolutely destroy anything close by once Kril’s MSG is leveled up enough. Once additional Umami charges are added to Kril’s repertoire as well, repeatedly using Squash over and over nearly guarantees Kril can crush anything standing in his way.

4Disco Ball

Stayin' Alive

The Sands Between - Central Vista

The most fun shell in the game to collect, Kril steals the disco ball from an unsuspecting gang of enemy crabs having a dance party on an island. It also comes with Twinkle, a homing missile that Kril can launch from a distance towards his foes.

The really nice benefit of this shell is its +5 addition to Kril’s MSG skill, making Twinkle more powerful by default and allowing the player to pour more precious levels into vitality and attack in place of MSG.

Steamed Crab

+10 Resistance

A shell with a ton of nice perks, the valve takes a podium spot here. Any shell that reaches the 200 HP mark in Another Crab’s Treasure is one of the strongest, and the valve takes things one step further by also offering a staggering +10 to Kril’s resistance stat.

Fizzle is the first Umami skill players will come across in the game as the soda can shell also features this move and is the shell first utilized by Kril to escape his shameful nudity. Launching a swarm of heat-seeking explosive orbs, Fizzle chips away enemy HP wonderfully when paired with a high MSG level.

Will Help Earn The Platinum

Party Time!

The trophy shell harbors one of the absolutebest Umami skills in the game— Party Time! Acting as a bazooka, Party Time! pulverizes enemies with a barrage of confetti and can even cancel a foe’s attack in the middle of its wind-up.

The trophy’s HP isn’t as high compared to some other large shells, but 180 is still a decent total, especially when combined with the Umami skill that can carry Kril through most of the game against bosses and grunts alike.

1Knight’s Helmet

Saves Your Souls

Juggernaut

The Old Ocean - Lookout Tower

No other shells in Another Crab’s Treasure even come close to the defensive capabilities of the knight’s helmet. It boasts an astronomical 350 HP and 70 defense to go along with the Juggernaut ability that allows Kril to withstand attacks even without the player holding down L1 to block.

Straight up ripped from one of thebest armor sets in FromSoftware’s Demon’s Souls, the knight’s helmet is battle-tested.

Acquired only after conquering the game’s most challenging optional section of platforming, the knight’s helmet is a worthy reward for those brave enough to collect it. If it worked for fending off thetoughest bosses in Demon’s Souls, it can work for Kril.
