Since COVID-19 hit this year and left many people stuck at home, gaming has seemingly been an even bigger hit than normal. Folks who don’t usually find themselves picking up a controller have dived straight into the Nintendo titleAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsdue to it’s relaxing and soothing gameplay, allowing players escapism from the chaos of the world. Audrey, an 89-year-old grandma, has been playing the game long before the virus took over and she’s now back again to show us her island which she now loves just as much as her time withNew Leaf.
At the beginning of last year, we first met Andrey, an 87-year-old grandma who was so obsessed withAnimal Crossing: New Leafon her 3DS, she spent3,580 hourson the game in the space of four years. Her grandson knew she played the game but had no idea how much until her beloved Nintendo 3DS broke and needed to be repaired, allowing him to have a peek at her process. Over a year later, Audrey was surprised with abrand new Nintendo Switchthat included the newly releasedAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsas a gift from her fans around the world. A few months on and fans have wondered how this now 89-year-old granny has been getting on with the game.
In theYouTubevideo made by her grandson, Audrey states that she still playsAnimal Crossing: New Leafbut now thatNew Horizonshas come along, she spends most of her gaming time on that instead. Audrey says she picks up her Switch daily and spends around three hours on the game doing different tasks and maintaining her island. When her grandson asks if she’s excited to show her fans around her new island inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons,Audrey replies “I guess” with a slight laugh “I’ll try to be”. I think Grandma Audrey just wants to be left alone to get on with gaming and who could blame her.
Before getting stuck into showing us her island, Audrey shows off herAnimal Crossingguide book to help her understand some of the aspects of the new title she may not be overly familiar with. Unfortunately, she had forgotten she even had it after placing it in a drawer to keep it safe (hey, we’ve all been there) but now she intends to give it a good read. Briefly commenting on how she can’t believe she’s lived this long, Audrey hopes she has more time ahead of her as “it’s a big book!”.
As her grandson joins her in-game for a tour around her island, the grandmother shows him her house, garden, and introduces him to her villager friends. The rest of the video is Audrey taking her grandson through her island and the different stores, things to do, and items she makes. Wrapping up the video, granny says that she “hopes everyone else enjoys it as much as I do” and also she hopes to do more things to her island like place pavements down and statues to make it look more lived in.
