Insomniac Games, the studio behind popular titles likeMarvel’s Spider-ManandRatchet & Clankwas hacked by a ransomware group called Rhysida last week. The group asked for their ransom demands to be met or they would release all the data. After the deadline passed, the group wasted no time and shared the documents on its site, revealing several games, files, and more.

The leaked documents revealed several upcoming games from Insomniac Games with their potential release windows including the announced Marvel’s Wolverine game and one of the documents revealed that an onlineSpider-Mangame from the developer was canceled.
Leaks Reveal a Multiplayer Spider-Man Game from Insomniac Was Canceled
The ransomware group posted over a terabyte of internal data with over a million files. The 98% of hacked data that was not sold was uploaded on the leak site, meaning that two percent of the data was sold to a bidder. The documents revealed several images, details, and more about various projects from the developer including an online Spider-Man game.
The game was calledSpider-Man: The Great Weband was supposed to be an action-adventure multiplayer open-world title with in-game purchases and was compared toGTA Onlinein the presentation to Marvel and Sony. The game was pitched to Sony/Marvel by Jen Huang, the CFO and head of finance who wanted to create a successful multiplayer franchise.

The documents showed several slides of the game’s pitch with the main slide revealing the concept art. The game’s approach was to use the market opportunity that the multiplayer games have presented, and some have been highly successful as well. However, it seems that the game was canceled as it isn’t in any of the leaked release roadmap documents, or the pitch was rejected.
The cancellation of the game is easily understandable as Sony has hinted at its plans to move away from live service and online games. It recently stated that it will only release half of the previously planned 12 games by 2025.The Last of Usmultiplayer game from Naughty Dog was also canceled a few days ago as the developer wanted to focus on singer-player narrative-focused titles.

However, it could also be possible that this game was theSpider-Versegame that was mentioned in the previous leak but there was no mention of anySpider-Verse title in the leaked documents. TheSpider-Verseleak got a lot of traction especially because of the easter eggs inMarvel’s Spider-Man2referencing the multiverse but it does not seem to be happening. Although Insomniac could be working on a multiplayer title after all as it was recently hiring people for a multiplayer game.
Other Games in the Leaked Documents
The other games from Insomniac that were mentioned in the leaked game roadmap include the upcomingMarvel’s Wolverinegame,Marvel’s Venom,Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, a newRatchet & Clanktitle,Marvel’s X-Mentitle, and a new IP. The potential release dates of these titles were also leaked with the roadmap dated July 2023.
Marvel’s Venomis due to release in fiscal year 2025,Marvel’s Wolverinein fiscal year 2026,Marvel’s Spiderman 3in fiscal year 2028,Ratchet & Clankin fiscal year 2029 which is a long wait,Marvel’s X-Menin fiscal year 2030, and the new IP in 2031-2032.Marvel’s X-Mencould be a direct sequel to the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game which still does not have a release date.

The leak also reveals a document signed between Sony and Marvel executives for threeX-Mengames to be published under the agreement. The first game isMarvel’sWolverine, and the other game isMarvel’s X-Mendue out in 2030 but the third game is still to be named or announced. This reveals that Sony is ready to bank on Marvel games developed by Insomniac Games.
