Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’sDeath Notehave many eye-opening moments, but the one that shocked fans the most was the death of L, who initially was believed to be the perfect rival of Light Yagami. He was a world-renowned detective who was against Light’s ideology and was very close to figuring out his identity as Kira.

L was indeed one of the smartest characters inDeath Note, and his death became one of the biggest twists that fans could have expected. However, there is a possibility that Ohba and Obata might have regretted killing L in the series, and they might have given some hints about it. These clues were hidden by the creators in their other work,Bakuman.
Bakumanis also one of the most popular anime and manga series, and while fans might not have noticed it, it shares an uncanny connection withDeath Note. In fact, just like inDeath Note, they were about to kill a major character withinBakumanbut avoided it after being advised by the editor.

Bakuman’sconnection withDeath Note
Bakumanis a slice-of-life story that follows artist Moritaka Mashiro and writer Akito Takagi, who are pursuing their dream of becoming manga artists. The two work under the pen name Ashirogi Muto, and the narrative followed withinBakumanactually draws inspiration from Ohba and Obata’s own experience working at Jump as manga creators.

However, Mashiro and Takagi are not only influenced by Ohba and Obata’s life but even their work;Reversidraws a parallel withDeath Note, which was one of the first works of Ohba and Obata. The story ofDeath NoteandReversiis similar in more than one way, and this similarity hints that Ohba and Obatashared their personal experience of workingonDeath Notewithin the manga inBakuman.
Reversifollows the story of Schwarz, who gets access to the power of a demon of darkness, which he believes he can use to bring peace within the world but in an apocalyptic way. However, Schwarz’s goals are countered by Weiss, who also has the power, but he actually wants to save the world from Schwarz’s anti-hero motives. It is quite similar toDeath Note’snarrative.

Reversiexpressed Ohba and Obata’s experiences and regrets
In theBakumanworld,Reversibecame a big name within the manga industry, just likeDeath Note.SeeingReversi’spopularity, the fictional Shonen Jump inBakuman’sworld asked Mashiro and Takagi to extend the storyline and continue it further. This puts the two in adilemma about how to proceedwith the next phase of their manga.
One of the first ideas that came to their mind was to kill Weiss, the morally correct character withinReversi. When they pitched this idea to their fictional editor, he complained about it and advised them to go with something else. Thus they had no choice but to extend the story, bringing it to a natural conclusion.

Tsugumi Ohba Created This Death Note Character Only So that Fans Could Pity Him
Thus, whileReversishares a lot of similarities withDeath Note, the conclusion is not one of them. This in a way suggests that Ohba and Obata might have regretted killing L inDeath Note, and if they hadn’t done that, the story would have been completely different, and Light might even have had a shot at redemption.
Bakumanis available to read on Viz Media.
