Watanabe spoke about the creative process that went into makingLazarusand looks back on his glorious 30-year career in the anime industry.

Broken from Watanabe’s usual episodic style,Lazaruswill instead play out as one singular continuous narrative. Such bold storytelling is a huge part of why there’s so much buzz surrounding this series. Under Watanabe’s command,Lazarusis expected to deliver an astounding anime experience.

Uzumakihas received a very controversial adaptation, which has inevitably raised many concerns over the upcoming anime,Lazarus, by the same production company.Uzumaki’s episode 1was really impressive, but the later ones could hardly carry on much from the first episode, deeply disappointing its audiences. There have been news reports circulating that budget constraints forced the studio to sacrifice quality for the rest of the series after the earth-shaking episode 1.
The Executive Producer ofUzumakiwrote that when the team had to make an impossible decision between abandoning the whole project, letting out just the first episode, or compromising on the quality and finishing the rest. They chose the last option, which has naturally fueled public discontent with the series. Fans hoped that the four episodes, at least, would have been published in a consistently good quality.
