Unlike many popular mainstream anime titles,Attack on Titanhad its fair share of great female characters. They were as integral to the narrative as their male counterparts, and Hajime Isayama steered clear of fan service while crafting them. However, one could argue that the mangaka’s handling of the female characters got worse as the story progressed.

Historia, Connie, Reiner, and Bertholdt are visible in a still from Attack on Titan anime

Historia exemplifies how the female characters were unfairly sidelined near the end without a proper conclusion. As a result of her questionable character arc, she remains one of the most detested characters in the series. Interestingly, fans pointed out a possibility during a discussion that could change our perception of her.

Attack on Titanfans hated Historia’s character progression

Among the training corps, Historia was an important character. She started out as Christa, an agreeable and sweet individual with an angelic presence. When it is revealed that Christa was actually Historia, the darkness in her heart is explored. After Ymir gives her an earful to live for herself, her character undergoes a great transformation. She emerged as a wonderful, strong addition to the Survey Corps.

Her closeness to Eren and her connection with the Royal Family turned her into a central figure in the story. After her true identity was revealed, she became queen, and her authoritative position made fans curious about how she’d affect the story. However, after the time skip she decided to get pregnant to support Eren’s plan over the others.

This event was never fully explored byHajime Isayama. Fans hated how Historia was pushed to the sidelines without a satisfactory conclusion. Her journey deserved a better send-off. For how her character was ruined, Historia ishated by fans and they blame the mangakafor not exploring her conclusion properly.

Historia’s presence and her characterization is more meaningful than it appears to be

While the popular opinion is that Isayama ruined a great character, fans pointed out an important point during a Reddit discussion.

The comment highlights how after a certain point in the story, Historia was pushed into situations irrespective of what she wanted. Historia’s life was tragic and she overcame her difficulties with the help of Ymir and the others. She made difficult decisions but still stood strong in the face of adversity. ThroughoutAttack on Titan, most characters led tragic lives.

The society and the circumstances left life-long scars on characters like Historia, Reiner, and Eren. In Historia’s case, even though she tried extremely hard to overcome her inhibitions, her rights were taken away from her. From being the queen to bearing a child, she defied what she learned from Ymir i.e. living for herself. She became more sacrificial and absent as she was never allowed to be who she truly was.
