At the very beginning of this journey, it was near impossible for anyone to foresee thatOne Piecewould actually end up being a world-class phenomenon. When Eiichiro Oda first came up with his concept of the heroic adventures of a silly rubber boy and his crew, this seemed a rather simple story plot.

But the success of this franchise continued to grow later on, and it seemed there was no limit to the extent of its popularity.

But as the saying goes, the harder you have to fight for something, the more priceless it will become once you achieve it. So naturally the great success ofOne Piecesurely had to see a load of troubles, controversies, and creative battles that tested the wit of its creator, the almighty Oda!

Establishing TheOne PieceEmpire Was Indeed a Very Challenging Task For Eiichiro Oda

The creation of theOne PieceEmpire was by no means easy for the now-legendary manga artist Eiichiro Oda. As Oda reminisced, this was the time when all manner of troubles intruded on his advance as a storyteller. In anintriguing interview(published on the Japanese website ‘Manga Tengoku’), he mentioned that he actually could draw really well as a kid, and won an award at age 17.

But it wasn’t until much later that he was able to come up with good stories. Initially, his head editor used to cancel out the rough draftes he came up with, as they weren’t up to the mark to actually get a manga serialization. Thus, the work was stalemated.

As far as drawings are concerned, well, I had no problems there but a comic isn’t just a bunch of pictures. Writing stories was something that used to be really hard for me. Whenever I showed my head editor rough drafts I would get all kinds of weak points pointed out to me and I couldn’t move forward.

The first big stumbling block was the ‘Wall of the Professional’, when he realized it would take a little bit more than just great art to succeed. Young Oda understood that he needed to learn more about storytelling, which was a pretty hard nut to crack for him in those earlier days.

That was the first ‘Wall of the Professional’ I hit. At the time, I just thought that people who drew great pictures became manga authors, because every one I knew of, drew pictures really well. So that’s about the time I started to seriously think about that thing called a ‘story’.

Undeterred by failures, Oda remained committed to his dream of being a manga author. After graduating from school, he entered a college for higher studies in his hometown for almost a year, but then he just dropped out! Soon after, he moved to Tokyo in order to devote himself to his craft of manga creation.

From then on I continued aiming to be a manga author and after graduating high school went to a college in Kumamoto but after a year of that I got to thinking, “This really is a waste of time.”, so I headed for Tokyo.

Continuing to work persistently finally allowed him to get around the hurdles, giving birth to the celebratedOne PieceEmpire. Oda, therefore, indeed proves that with hard work and persistence, success will always knock at your door.

What Exactly Motivated Oda To CreateOne Piece?

In the same interview,Oda mentionedthat when he was in kindergarten, his desire to become a manga artist began while reading some of the works of Fujio Fujiko. Finding out that manga artists could make a living drawing, Oda was hooked by the thought of being able to turn his dream into a career.

For him, because he loved to draw, it was never considered work, compared to the office job his father did. But this realization triggered in him the desire to become a manga author, combining his love for art and freedom.

When I was in Kindergarten I really liked the work of Fujio Fujiko but when I heard that all they had to do to make a living was draw pictures, I was so jealous. Back then, that meant exactly the same thing as ‘not working at all’. Of course being a manga author means ‘working’ is drawing pictures, but what kid thinks drawing a picture means work?

Encouraged by his friends and people close to him, Oda gradually gained more confidence in drawing. Having a clear goal in mind, he practiced rigorously. This early motivation formed the groundwork for further success and finally allowed the creation of the famousOne Pieceseries. Oda stands as proof that childhood dreams may form aspirations and determine great achievements in life.
