Mass Effect hasamazing loreand characters, and beyond that, it has a great combat system with interesting powers that will require strategy; you can also tell your teammates when to help with their own unique powers.

Instead of Ellie, what about Atreus, the son of theGod of War? Kratos has learned from his past–revenge will never fill that hole deep inside. So, he moves on with his son Atreus. You’ll again be presented an excellent tale withgory combatsimilar to that of The Last of Us.

God of War has everything you’re looking for: a passionate story, brutal combat, a great soundtrack, and two characters on an unforgettable journey. The exploration ofNorse mythologyis fascinating, and Santa Monica’s twists within the mythology add a great mystery to it.

7/10 Uncharted Series

Why not try Naughty Dog’s other work?Unchartedis gaming’s version of Indiana Jones.Nathan Drakeis drastically different from Joel. He likes tocrack a jokeat the worst of times to lighten the mood and often gets extremely lucky–unlike Joel.

Treasure huntinghas never been so fun. The Uncharted games are all consistently good at telling stories and going in-depth on characters. You’ll climb and puzzle your way closer to treasures with every journey.

Bioshocks Big Daddy

If you like an engaging plot,Bioshockis a great call. The dreary world of Bioshock is horrifying, yet it holds a special place in many hearts. It has possibly the mostatmosphericsetting in any games as you plunge down intoRapture, a city built deep in the ocean. It’s an extremely tense games with iconic enemies like theBig Daddylurking about. Even though they have a vicious nature, they convey some sadness even with their suit of armor covering them up.

Bioshock has one of the greatest plots in gaming and is full ofunforgettable moments. With the remastered collection available, all three games can easily be played together.

5/10 Detroit Become Human

You’ll play as three androids with their own unique stories where they can die at any moment, creating multiple different endings.Detroit Become Humanpresents a very humanizing story about androids living in the not-so-distant future.

You play asthree different androidin three intersecting narratives: Connor, the detective who’s job is to take down androids who have gone rogue; Kara, who wants to help a young girl escape her abusive father; and Markus, who wants top create a revolution to give androids the rights they deserve. Each these unique individual stories will affect each other, making all the choices impeccably important.

4/10 Metro Series

Sticking to the apocalypse theme, you may’t go wrong with theMetroseries. Set in Russia after the events of nuclear warfare, the game is primarily set underground, creating aclaustrophobicatmosphere. You have to contend with the dark ones, mutants who learned to survive in the nuclear apocalypse. Artyom, the protagonist, finds that he can somewhat communicate with them, deepening the mysteries of the world.

Metro’s decision making throughout offers two endings in each game. You’ll encounter multiple characters, some allies, who all unique separate motives and agendas, so it can be tough to know who you can trust. Metro is a wonderfully unique experience.

3/10 Yakuza 0

This is exceptionally different to The Last of Us, but it has the most important element: story telling.Yakuzaknows how to tell deadly serious stories that are heart-wrenching. Then it brings you goofy side missions like fighting zombies to protect Michael Jackson.

Yakuza 0 is set in the eighties and is extremely charming. Your two protagonists, Majima and Kiryu, are quite different, yet you’ll love the both of them equally.

2/10 Resident Evil Series

More zombies?Resident Evilhas you covered. With the recent remakes, Resident Evil 2 is an excellent place to start. Resident Evil has great combat,tense atmosphere, and interesting lore. The stories aren’t as well told as The Last of Us, but they’re interesting, and if you read the files filled with lore, the story will become more apparent as it’s not just told to you.

Dialogue can sometimes be clunky, even bad–especially in the older Resident Evil games–but it has a strange charm to it. Level design isphenomenaland can be deeply rewarding if you embrace exploration. Resident Evil should scratch that zombie itch.

One of the best stories ever put in a videogame.Arthur Morgan, the protagonist, brings you along with him during the end of the wild west era. A heist has gone wrong, and now the camp needs to find a way to make more money. The story goes far and beyond just money, though. Arthur’s personal story is unforgettable as he battles with himself and others throughout the adventure.

The main story is amazing, but theside missionsare just as great. Side missions are often very involved, taking place over multiple separate missions, and share the same quality and care put into the game’s main narrative. On top of that,Red Dead Redemption 2might be one of the best looking games ever. You’ll just be in awe of how beautiful the world is.
