Open-world gameplay is a great way to experience a virtual world at one’s own pace and chase one’s desires. This style of play has been emulated in a modern city, the cowboy west, and even in space. However,Fallouthas undoubtedly championed the sandbox style of play in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world.

Players can travel from village to village while meeting friends and enemies along the way. But besides its nonlinear approach to its story, Fallout also included a great deal of RPG elements, which allows players the chance to fight for good or evil. Here’s a list of other games Fallout fans would enjoy.

10BioShock

BioShockmight not have the same kind of sandbox style that Fallout does, but there were still a lot of elements that the two games share. Besides both being first-person shooters, both games have an eerie dystopian approach to their stories, characters, and themes.

Both worlds are about taking the worst of humanity and trying to find goodness in it. And besides the story, Bioshock has a very interesting way of showcasing its abilitiesand beautiful graphics thatFallout fans would find refreshing.

Rapture from bioshock

Red Dead Redemptionand Fallout have completely different worlds. A dystopian landscape ravaged by nuclear war couldn’t be further from the old west, but the two games still have a lot in common.

Their open-world approach to gameplay is very similar. Plus, there’s an element of the wandering cowboy that Fallout emulates. It hasthe player exploring the worldand helping out strangers along the way. That kind of cowboy storytelling is exactly what Red Dead Redemption tries to encapsulate.

8I Am Alive

From a gameplay standpoint, I Am Alive is a refreshing change for Fallout fans who love the game’s dystopian landscape. I Am Alive also takes place in a post-apocalyptic city filled with dangerous people. The game focuses more on climbing and platforming exploration rather than being an RPG.

But still, the themes of trying to survive at all costs and trying to be a decent person in an indecent world carry over to both games. Of course, it’s hard to top Fallout’s expansive sandbox, but that doesn’t make a linear approach to storytelling any less worthy.

7Resistance

TheResistanceseries is about an alien invasion that humanity has to unite against and push back against. Both it and Fallout utilize a first-person view for their action. However, Resistance focuses more on a linear style with levels rather than an open-world sandbox style that allows for exploration.

Both games have a very similar aesthetic, though. The Resistance invasion occurs in the past, so a lot of the atmosphere and ambiance reflect nostalgia. Fallout is very similar as it also has a very 1950s atomic punk vibe.

6The Outer Worlds

Since both games are developed byBethesda, Fallout and The Outer Worlds are both very similar to each other. They have an open-world, first-person gameplay style that involves traveling to different villages or worlds and helping people along the way.

There’s also an RPG and morality function that allows players to have multiple endings. Essentially, The Outer Worlds feels like Fallout in space, but the fact that the player gets to physically travel todifferent planets in a spaceshipand use a wide variety of weapons is a lot of fun.

The Outer Worlds

Despite taking place in the future,Killzonealso has a lot of nostalgic imagery that lends itself to a steampunk style. It’s probably more similar to Resistance in that its levels are designed to be linear and direct the player in a certain direction.

Fallout doesn’t do any of this as even the missions can be accomplished in a variety of different ways. But even given these differences, Fallout still excels at first-person action and adventure. Killzone doesn’t have a lot of RPG elements, but it delivers on the action.

4Metro 2033

SinceMetro 2033essentially has the same starting premise as Fallout, the games are very similar. Fallout generally takes place over a large swath of land such as Washington D.C. or Las Vegas. Metro focuses solely on Russia.

It also has a much more horrific edge to its nuclear, post-apocalyptic landscape with mutants, monsters, and underground societies. Fallout has a lot of these things too, but it doesn’t lean into horror territory. Instead, it gives its dystopian world more of a fantasy vibe. But fans of one should be fans of the other.

Gameplay from Killzone 2 PS3

When it comes to post-apocalyptic movies,Mad Maxis one of the most well-known and successful franchises. So obviously depicting it in a game would be very similar to the world of Fallout.

The great thing about dystopian games is that there are many ways in which the apocalypse could play out. The destructive wasteland of Fallout is completely different from what Mad Max offers, but they both have a similar vibe so that fans of the genre can get something new. Plus, they both have open-world styles of play.

One of the best parts about the Fallout experience is just exploring the vast world it takes place in. If that’s what gamers are looking for, then Skyrim would be right up their alley. The two games exist in completely different genres. Fallout is a dystopian story while Skyrim is strongly rooted in fantasy.

However, the themes and general ideas of both games remain the same. It’s all about traversing a large world and helping or hurting people along the way. Add in some heavy RPG elements, andboth Bethesda games have a lot more in commonthan one might think.

1Borderlands

From a purely formulaic standpoint,Borderlandsand Fallout are essentially the same thing. They have a first-person viewpoint with RPG elements and a sandbox style that allows players to pick up missions and execute them at their discretion.

The only difference between the games is all on the surface. Borderlands has a much more comedic tone to it witha cartoonish style of art. It also leans more heavily into science fiction as the games take place on fictional planets. Those elements aside, they both have similar experiences.
